Hello Webmaster:

I have been told a lot of stories about purchasing transiberian train tickets.

First, I want to visit Russia by next march-april 2005. I want to visit Irkutsk and Baikal Lake. I have been told that I must buy my train tickets with 45 days in advance at least...¿IS IT TRUE?.

Isn´t possible to buy transiberian tickets to Irkutsk in Moscow with just one or two days in advance?. Of course I cannot afford staying 45 days in Moscow as my tourist visa will only last 30 days

hi Klamm,

my friend and i will be in a similar situation as you come March 2005 - we'll be travelling along the trans-mongolian from Beijing to Moscow, stopping in Irkutsk, and will (fingers crossed) get away with purchasing tickets at the train stations ourselves.

from what people have told me booking tickets at the train station in winter is generally a pretty safe bet, so long as you have a couple of days to spare just in case it's booked out. i think it's the summer months when problems occur.

let us know how you go.

cheers,
kris

^I had the same doubt.

can I buy tickets online (and not doing it through a travel agency)?

No, advance purchase is through a travel agent, use one in Russia.

Hi everybody.
What I can advice is if you're going alone, don't worry about the tickets. For sure you can buy tickets for the train leaving same or next day, unless you have some preference for particular train or travelling at the cheapest rate.
