Hi there,

I wonder if you can help me clarifying few things in my mind with regard to visa and registration.

- If I get a visa invitation for a 12 month multiple entry visa from an organization in a city called A...

- and if my intent is to go to a city called B and stay there few weeks (no intention whatsover to stay in city A)...

- and if the organization in question does NOT have office or representation in city B...

- and if I plan to rent an apartment in city B...

Could you please tell me the best steps for me to take with respect to registration so I can stay legally in city B?

Many thanks,

Jason

On my last trip to Russia I used a 12 month business visa. When I applied for the visa, I stated that I would travel to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and few other cities that I would possibly spend more than 3 days consecutively. I registered it with the company that issued the visa for a price of 300 roubles, and they had it ready for me the same day. On my next trip if I travel to a city where the company does not an office, then I would go to the local OVIR and register there.

So basically if you plan to be in a city where the company that provided you with the invitation does not have an office, you must register at the local OVIR. However, I think it would be a good idea to have the city where you plan stay listed on your visa to avoid unnecessary hassles.

And remember, if you apply for a visa that will valid for more than 3 months, you must submit an HIV test certificate with your application.

Thanks Brent. Well that was exactly my question. What documents do you need in order to register in OVIR in city B?

Waytorussia, if you're listening, would you kindly answer this question, given the situation I described?

Thanks,

Jason

Jason, it's easy: the organization from city A gives you a special letter addressed to OVIR in city B. You bring this letter to the OVIR in city B and they register you there. You need your passport, visa (well, of course) and the migration card.

Usually a reliable visa support company will have a rep office or at least partners in the city where it is hard to register in OVIR, so if the company is reliable and there is NO representative -- it means registering in the local OVIR is quite easy.

Also, when you arrive there, you have 3 days to look through the local ads or ask around in a few hotels if there is anybody who can provide a registration for you without having to go to OVIR (if you really don't want to go there). Although, I would be careful here giving out my passport to unknown people. So, I recommend to get this letter for OVIR from your visa support company and then register in city B with no problems.
