Le me get this straight, you are going to Russia and you don't know any Russian?

Priglashenie is the Russian word for invitation. So if your girlfriend phones you and says "Come to Moscow, you can stay at my apartment" that is a priglashenie.

However, the Russian government doesn't care about your girlfriend. They don't give visas to anybody unless there is a bonafide Russian organization that will take responsibility for that person while they are in Russia. The invitation that the embassy is interested in is an official document from a Russian government department that confirms that you really do have a bonafide visa support organization inside Russia who will take responsibility for you. Naturally, they call this a priglashenie because they just happen to speak Russian.

I don't know how the Russian embassy in New York likes their paperwork to be handled and the rules for US citizens are different than the UK, but I never saw my priglashenie at all. It was couriered directly from Russia to the embassy in London. When my visa application met up with it, it was approved 3 days later. That's because I paid for the VIP express service for my visa processing.
