U-day, as always, ready to suggest something extra-ordinary. GUM is a nice place to look around if your pockets are stuffed with cash. But if you want to buy souvenirs and some of the Russian traditional stuff - go to Ismailovo market.
Open markets are very popular among Russians. They usually sell the same staff you can find in expensive department stores but several times cheaper. My advice to you go to Tcherkizovo market and enjoy shopping. Also prices are real good in Ashan and Metro stores. Gum is more like a symbol, not a real shopping area. But keep in mind: one man's poison is another man's meat. This is just my personal opinion!

I would suggest big stores like ramstor-city(well its on the north, might be unconvenient location for people from other parts of the city), Mega which is near mkad too, tk okhotnyi riad under manezh, its a little bit too crowded but has some nice shops, and other places of such type. The most convenient thing about such stores is that you can buy absolutely everything there.
But if you exactly know what you need, then specializied shops near subways stations are ok too.

Markets mentioned above i'd recommend only if you want to try something extreme lol.

Try the weekend market at Izmaylovsky Park.
