Okay I have hearing lots and people whining about Winston's ban and now with fight against Global Terrorism and EU placing more rules on immigrants, is big brother here?
Hobbes wrote is his book that an individual must give some rights to feel protected. AKA I give my right to murder someone to the state (population in general), in turn that the state will ensure that everyone has no right to kill me. Certain governments have extend these laws in prorecting us from Child pornoography, Slanderous accusations, and things that make life go smoother like forcing everyone to learn the language of the country you are in. With the fight in Global Terrrorism, the state is now installing more laws to protect us, thus individual rights are reduced.
YOu can scream about that we all should complete free right. By Hobbes answer to that was " Life would be short nasty and brutish " . If Kiwiguy did not like Winston, he could kill him without penality. Okay, you agree that we cannot do that. But Winston posting about Jack on how he is liar and cheat. That could harm Jack's business if was/wasn't true. So does Winston have the right to post possible slanderous material on someone. Yes/No? I cannot put an ad in local newspaper that I found dog meat in McDonald's hamburger and state it as fact. But I should be able to state that I got poor service or poor quality food.
So how far are you willing to give your rights to be safe? |

I wonder how ordinary Russians think of this issue?
I can only guess that young Russians are more influenced by these Western values than older or more conservative Russians. However, I can't say that the examples around them are good ones. Too many corrupt politicians abuse the values and it seems very few people really value the principles as they're supposed to be. It's hard enough to balance everything but even in the West (including the countries in Europe) have problems assessing everything because there's usually both a positive and negative result no matter which way you go. |
