Hey,
Me and my boyfriend are going to Moscow in March. I´ve read a lot about the good and quick Metro, my only problem is that I´m using a wheelchair. Does anyone ´know if I can get down to the Metro with wheelchair? How does the bus network work, can i get around as good by bus as by Metro?

If someone knows I would be really greatfull for an answer!
/Nora

From what I observed when there, it may be hard in the metro as from what I've seen, they only have a long escalator down to the platform, no elevators. And many of the 'buses' are in fact private minivans, so there may be some difficulty there as well. Again, Im no expert, so take it with a grain of salt.

The only people with wheelchairs I've seen tackling the Metro with amazing dexterity (sometimes I think they just live there) were there to beg, unfortunately. I suppose you can ask metro passengers for help; they are kind people and do help invalids, but during peak hours it's hard to accomodate anybody. Most ramps are a dodgy, and too steep in many places I think. Suggest you hire a driver with a car to get around Moscow. Most public transport facilities are just not wheelchair-friendly.

Nora,

I don't want to dampen your spirits, but Russia is a very difficult place to visit in a wheelchair. There are very few public places with wheelchair access.

That's not to say it can't be done, indeed there are people in the metro in wheelchairs. Anyone who's ridden it frequently can attest that there are war veterans who ask for money and go from wagon to wagon all day. BUT, it must be a major pain in the neck. The escalators are quite long and somewhat narrow. The steps are rather steep and not too wide. There are no elevators.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

I confirm Russia doesn t have the means to invest on special disabled accesses, but i think you guessed it before posting.

My legs still remember the kicks from the Moscow subway entrance barriers...the most unpleasant part of the visit.
