Getting up in the cold and dark in a dismal leaky concrete apartment, shoving her way on to the Matrushka and then the Metro, working for low wages till she's 35 then getting the axe because she's not young and cute anymore, sexual harassment on the job, reverse transit trip home in the cold and dark. Possible underemployed vodka drinking husband in the picture--temporarily.

How many pages does she need?

Why are you doing your daughter's homework for her? She should do her own research!

Comrade, you would dispute my thumbnail sketch? I've been to St, Pete and it's not much better. It's my guess that you're a guy and hold and unrealistic view of what the 'average' Russian woman faces every day. It isn't pretty and I wouldn't trade places with them. If you walked in their moccasins for a few days I'll bet you wouldn't either.

Anna and Alice,
Are you going to let these comments slide? Come now it can't be that dismal for all Russian women in an average day. I am not suggesting that day to day living is not without hard work, and struggles but I know many women in US especially single parents who do not have a very pretty day to day life. Life is hard for most people and an so called average day usually is routine and mundane.

Now I KNOW you must be a guy. You thought that was funny?? It wasn't meant to be funny. You must have an abstract sense of humor.

From what I've seen in here, most of the posters tend to be young, single, and have a poorly developed sense of what it takes to survive in the real world. Clubs and devushkas are fine and fun, but that's a young and temporary period of life. I can assure you that there is a great deal of truth in what I said.

I thought that the typical Russian holiday was Anapa, Antalya (Turkey,) or Sharm-El Shekh (Egypt.) You're right about the marshutka rides... she wouldn't take the metro unless she's in Moscow. Russian women typically live in 2 or 3 room apartments, unless they're poor losers in which case they share a 1-room with their entire families. They are typically educated but have a weakness for Brazillian serials like Klon. They usually own new cell phones - many are divorced but others are married with one or two children. Families typically live in 3 room apartments in cities - one room for the parents, one for the children, plus a common room. If they have saved some money, they might 'remont' (rennovate) their apartments. The rennovation can be 'kosmeticheski' (cosmetic) or 'kapitalni' (requiring a significant investment - around 10k.) Most homes are equipped with washing machines. Almost all Russians own their own homes and almost none have outstanding debt. Russians are the quickest to marry and to divorce in Eastern Europe. Russians generally live in the city in which they were born, unless they have fled formerly Soviet countries in Central Asia. Women usually get married by 25 and children usually live with their parents before marriage and often continue to live in their parents apartments as married couples until the senior moves to the family's 'dacha' (1 or 2 room cottage) in the country.

Younger women have it best because it's considered ok or even traditional to have a 'sponsortsvo' (sugar daddy.) Women retire early, at 60, but have little to look forward to other than a meager pension of around 2500 rubles (90 bucks.)

Cyndy, i was quiet because i wasn't sure what i should write here... everyone seems to be more informed than me how hard life in Russia is.
For me and all my friends and acquaintaces its not that hard i guess, maybe i communicate with such people, i dont know any young (under 30) women that have to plant vegetables to survive, on the contrary most of my acquaintaces about 22-30 have good jobs and live quite full life, those who are younger live with their parents and dont need to worry about anything either, so i am not quite sure if life is hard... if you have brains and education you can accomplish almost everything.. especially considering that even most prestigeous and elite universities belong to the state hence they are free, everyone can get very good education, so all you need is brains

Anyways I will be there at the end of March and see how life is.
To tell you the truth, after the events from the last week, not looking forward to it at all.
Won't be posting for a while, if you think that I was in a shitty before, it is much much worse.

Alice,
They may think they are more informed but a) they are not women and b) are not Russian. Thank you for sheding some truth on this subject and informing us all about what daily life is like for many Russian women. I find it interesting that many people on this forum do seem to be very critical and opinionated about life in Russia. If people think it's so dismal and corrupt, then why are they so attracted to Russia. And expatriats I would be inclined to agree with Doc- often they can be overly critical because they are expatriates duh! Anyways the women I met when I visited Russia were smart, attractive, hard working, kind and had a sense of humor. They did not seem miserable. Also Doctor Fauste, I think a trip to Russia will do you a world of good. You need a change and travel will do that. You should meet up with Alice and Dmitri or others. I am going on a little trip Sunday down to the keys in sunny Florida. Iam not a winter girl, trhough I bet St Petersburg is absolutely magnificent in winter. But we will go in June when weather is better and Alex is out of school.

Alice, you need more Russian women posting here. Smile Various posters give their two cents, their opinions and such but very few women from or in Russia (i.e. Russian women) respond or post here. The few that did were not here long and there's no way to verify that they were Russian. I mean, they were not here long so who knows....

I am curious about something, though. This thread made me think of it. I was wondering how much or how often Russian women use the internet. (There are stats which assert that more North American women are using the internet). Is it expensive there (for high speed or dial up)? Also, do they mostly visit websites in the Russian language (i.e. Cyrillic)? I found a penpal site and I was writing a couple of Russian girls and after a couple of replies, they stopped. No big deal as I was not surprised. But, I wondered how often Russians use the internet and what do they use it for. What percentage of the population can communicate sufficiently in English and how interested are they in learning English? Many Westerners, I think, would like to exchange language help as it's a benefit to have knowledge of a foreign language (even if Russian is not the most useful in the USA but it is useful to have even a basic understanding in Canada).
