Have you never heard of a 12 month business visa? If you had that visa you could go to Russia and take you time figuring out what to do. You could get advice from people in Russia who have personal direct experience with the immigration maze. But now, you will either spend two months running around government offices trying to find someone who will give you the documents you need. You will spend countless hours waiting in queues and end up paying several bribes that get you nowhere. Or, you could spend two months enjoying your visit, return to the USA, get the 12 month business visa and go back to Russia. The Russian embassy in your home country is the right place to be asking this kind of question, not here.
