Ouch, CAPS = SHOUTING by the way...

Right... here we go... Confused

As an Englishman (well, a man born in England... not by choice I might add...) whose spent alot of time living in other countries, including Russia... I think I can respond a tadge honestly... Razz

Valentines day in Russia takes a big 2nd place to 8 March (Wimmens day...) Laughing

There are often quite important differences between Russian and English men! It would be surprising if that was not true! You can find good and bad types in both Russian and English men, however you will find many more bad types in Russian since life is tougher (and shorter!) and vodka is cheaper... so alcoholism is far more rife, to the degree where it's viewed as "acceptable" as opposed to stigmatic among elements of the Russian working classes...

The point being Alcoholism is an anti-social disease... with symptoms that include domestic violence and other forms of family abuse, so if alcoholism is widespread... it follows that family integrity will suffer... and if you want proof then look up "Femina" which is a Russian internet and physical network which aims to support victims of domestic violence...

Not that I object to a drink... and not that I've never drunk down through the bottom of the bottle either for that matter... no angel myself... however that's not the topic... Cool

The other matter in the Russian mans favour is that men can earn more than women... in general at least (again, working class people...) and that they are outnumbered by Russian women (aided by virtue of the fact the girls don't hit the bottle as hard as the blokes...) Shocked

Russian culture also suggests it's almost normal, indeed a sign of prowess, for a Russian man to have a number of intimate female friends, especially if he is married... Confused

So regards SOME of Russias male population you can see how the seeds have been sown from the above... BUT please do not assume everyone is a drunk... some working class men are not, and are very good family figures, and that applies much more to the more educated Russian man too...

In my opinion you'll find more romantic types in other places! But that might depend on whether or not there's any incentive to such a relationship since, as some Russian women are most insincere when it comes to getting the right of abode elsewhere in the world - so too will be the Russian man!

As for what qualities Russian men value in women I would have thought the answer was the same as the qualities any man seeks in women... although perhaps Russian women are more tolerent to suffering and inequality and might therefore possess more stoical patience than some other women... so the Russian man will expect her to run the household alone, and possibly fail to help her out with any domestic chores... as well as being rather selfish in between the sheets... Shocked

And I've had a couple of long term Russian females who've voiced such accounts straight into my ear canal on any occasions... it's not hearsay...

If Russian men are so great then why are there some 750,000 Russian girls who leave Russia each year (many eventually return by the way) because in my experience people who love eachother will live anywhere that they can be together... so a Russian partner who appreciates you for who you are should be just as commited to you if you choose to live with them in Russia instead of you both having a life in, say, England...

It all comes down to, not simply "Good" and "Bad" - but... "how can you tell..." and unfortunately nobody can tell you that, you must learn for yourself...

Personally the only sort of "free and single" English wimmen in my neck of the woods disgust me with their lude and overtly over-suggestive overtures, their dependence on materialistic aspects of live... and their shallow-mindedness... but then, that's why I try to spend as little time as possible living in the UK... and it makes me appreciate homely Russian females all the more! I hear that American commercial holidays are now being forced onto helpless Eastern Europeans. So not only is Valentine's Day, which nobody ever heard of before, being celebrated, some people actually get Halloween parties, Father's Day, May Day and chocolate Easter eggs.People all over Poland have been pushed into celebrating their birthday like the rest of the world. What would be the height of the heights was if the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving were assimilated too. Smile .

Ugh, Valentine's tomorrow. Not only is it a WalmartHallmark holiday, it serves to remind all the singles and loners just how single and miserable they are.

**Mark your calender for March 8th, that's Women's Day.

Okay everyone dumps on the Russian men and how wonderful Russian women are. There is issues with both and things that are great. But it is a culture issue. 1/9 of Russian men are alcoholics. After meeting many Russian women, 1/9 of the Russian women would drive you to become an alcoholic.

I wonder if there will be a cultural change in which there is more young women than young men? I am going to sit down and read Generation n soon.

I don't think I could ever live in peace with a Slavic man.Think about it; from an American woman's point of view, the archetypical Polish or Russian guys are controlling, manipulative, spoiled, unmannered, don't help out with housework, generally don't know how to treat a woman, are closeminded, homophobic and soooo stubborn. And can be quite cold and unkind. And seem to not know how to smile. And if they live in the U.S.A, blindly vote conservative. Not to mention the big strike against all European men. Alcocholism is the least of their faults.

It also reminds some singles just how thankful they are for their singlehood. Wink No complaints here!
OK, most of the time.

I would say that Valentine's Day is pretty important in Russia. Even on Sakhalin, the island which is basically cut off the rest of the world, people celebrate this holiday quite widely. It's one of my favourite holidays, I usually get about 25 valentines and I am feeling loved. Anywho, I would say that Valentine's Day is pretty important in Russia.

Thank you Katayara for sharing your positive feeling about Valentines Day. I don't understand why people are so cynical about love. It is not just about love between husbands and wives or lovers. It is a celebration to acknowledge all kinds of love including our love for our family, our close friends, kindred spirits and love for humanity, etc. Can we not try to be a little less cynical and more positive here? I wish all of you, feelings of love and sentiment this valentines's day and especially hope that all of you will cultivate love and kindness in your relationships among people who you care about.

I totally agree with you! Even if the holiday originated as a holiday of lovers, it's to the point now that everybody celebrates it, mothers and kids, friends and aquiantances. I love this holiday, I feel loved! Hey, just curiousity. How old are you really? Your messages don't look like 7-year-old kid's messages. Bye. Hope to talk to you soon!
