Historically, Russia seems destined to suffer martyr-like no matter what it does. Perhaps it's appropriate that the word "stoic" has Slavic roots. |

Disney World, perhaps. |
While I can't agree that American culture is as rich as any other, I challenge anyone to find another 200-year old country that has produced as many great artists, writers, and filmmakers. The US is off to a great start in this respect. |

One of the best things to come out of Great Britain is the United States. |

Referee... Goddamn... the doctor wants to see if the Polar Bear likes Fish n' Chips or Hogs Pudding... it'll be like Robinson Crusoe, only with frostbite...
But... regards the earlier topic... I think that even a Polar Bear, with taste bad enough to devour an Englishman on an ice floe, has more culture than the U$ of A... |

And Russia'd get there faster, ironically enough, if a few more women were given positions of greater influence in political matters from the grass roots level upwards as far, indeed, as the Kremlin... |
The only country that has taken an activist role in promoting women in leadership positions is Sweden. I don't think that doing so really makes much of a difference. If you look at the countries that have female Presidents/PMs, the progressive attitudes taken by the country were just as instrumental in creating the country's success as steps taken to promote womens' interests (btw I am an unrepentant supporter of Maggie Thatcher.) One thing that CAN be said for females in positions of power is that they are less likely to be corrupt. Sure there are examples of the contrary being true (newly appointed PM Timoshchenko, also the ex Pres. of Finland) but generally women are less likely to take bribes. Some Russian communities (Rybinsk comes to mind) have started to replace their cops with females in order to cut down on corruption. |

Though I hate to remind the world... look at what happened with Britain when the PM was Thatcher... the neighbouring countries diplomatic services were all practically pissing their panties when her wrath was incurred...
Inparticular the French foreign attache is rumoured to have actually had an embarrassing accident on one occasion!
Don't know owt about Swedish politics, but lowering bribery would certainly improve Russias integrity, and that in itself would be a sound beginning of sorts because the corruption now is astoundingly bad... |
