I would like to get as much information regarding travel by train (one of the three train across Russia) in a East-West direction.
My time of travel will be around the first part of February 2004. I would like to stay for about a week in one of the Youth Hostel in Moscow and in St Petersburg.
I will be travelling from the US West Coast to Pusan (South Korea) by freighter.

Please provide infos on the following subjects:
One-way train ticket
Lodging (as requested)
Visa.
Is there a ferry form Pusan to Vladivostock, if not, what would be the easiest way to get to one of the train stations.

Henri,
There are ferries from Pusan to Vladivostok and Nakhodka. Try and get one that goes to Vladivostok.
You can buy your trans-sib ticket (train "Rossiya", No 002M) from the railway station which is directly behind the shipping terminal. It leaves every second day, and departure may be up to 8 hours delayed. You get off at Moscow Yaroslavl.
It takes the better part of 7 days to go Vladivostok -> Moscow.
Moscow -> St Petersburg can be done on an overnight train, and it leaves from Leningradskii station, which is about 400 metres from Yaroslavl.

Read the Visa stuff on this website. 1st choice would be Business Visa, second would be Tourist.

While you are contemplating away in Seattle, do yourself a favour and buy Bryn-Thomas' Trans-Siberian Handbook. Invaluable!!!.

After you've scoured away here, go to the thorntree at lonelyplanet.com and check out Ruth's "sticky" about travelling around East Euro/Russia. Lots of info there as well.

And learn to read the cyrillic alphabet, and to say some basic phrases if you can't already....

Regards
UsualSuspect.
