Greetings,

In about two months my wife and I will be traveling to Moscow to visit my cousin. She is an American citizen working in Moscow, and we plan on staying with her in her apartment. She also has a friend in Saint Petersburg who we are planning to visit, and we will be staying in an apartment there as well.

We won't be staying in hostels or hotels at any point in the trip, and my cousin isn't able to get us an invitation in time because she is currently having her own visa processed. So does anyone have suggestions for the best way to get visa invitations and registrations?

Thanks,

Peter

Edit: My wife and I are American citizens currently residing in America.
Edit: We will be in Russia for a total of 10 days.

Why can't people do their own reading first? See http://www.waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Registration.html

Only Russian citizens can get you a (private) visa invitation.

Your best option would be a tourist visa ordered through a visa or travel agency who will provide the registration for you.

mediashark,

I had already read through that page, thanks. It looks like our options are fairly limited since we are staying with someone in Moscow:

Quote:

The new visa registration procedures concern those, who are staying at friends' place or are renting an apartment in Moscow. Starting from September 2004 the travel agencies in Moscow can't register the visas anymore, and the only way to make a registration is to either go in a hotel and buy the cheapest room there (can be $10 per night) or to go through the Passport Department (costs only $0.7, but may take a few hours). Some travel agencies provide assistance with registration for a fee, but they basically make it either through a hotel or through the passport department.

So we can either book a room at a hostel or register ourselves, which my cousin tells me is extremely time consuming. I'm just hoping to hear from other people who have actually done this, to see if I can learn from their (good/bad) experiences.

It doesn't matter if you're staying with someone in Moscow -- there are some companies that can do a registration for you for a fee. Call +7 905 551-0214 for more info.

The trick is to find the right visa agency. It's important you ask about the services they provide about registration.

Of course a hotel is the easiest option.

I've used Visalink several times without any difficulties. If you get an original letter of invitation and are willing to wait 5 weeks or so, a ME 1-year business visa costs only 3900 rubles. 30-day tourist visas are processed the same day and cost only 1200 rubles (about 43 bucks) and includes registration upon arrival. They are on the small side street directly behind the Duma off Tverskaya. It's run by some 35ish blonde woman who speaks English, and her elderly Ukrainian mother, who doesn't speak a word of it. Here is their site: http://www.visalink.ru/candt.html#3 Rates are higher for telex but the wait time is significantly less.
