Hi,

We visited Новые Песни о Главном -russian pop-concert in Saint Petersburg at Ледовый Дворец 4.3.2005. Concert was really great, but we were really amazed how all the people were sitting still. They just clapped hands after performance.

We would have liked to scream and wave hands and so on.. but didnt dare. Well just a little maybe Laughing Tv-camera was following us many times and I guess thats because of our strange behaviour Embarassed (lunatics from Finland...)

Are all the concerts like that or were we at the "wrong" concert? What if some foreign group is performing? In Finland we never sit still in pop-concerts.

I think it's just the wrong concert... Smile different organizers have different ways of running things. Or maybe it's just that the people were bored.... same old songs that were already boring after being in the popsa charts for a couple of weeks...

sounds like you might like rock festivals held outdoors or in stadiums instead where the people just go CRAZY! They scream, wave their hands, flags, streamers and who-knows-what-else wildly, jump and dance around. That is provided that the organizers intended it to be that way and allow for standing room near the stage.

I think it's partially the venue and partially the type of music. A lot of these televised concerts of the so-called 'Russkaya estrada' are held in large former opera halls and staged for the bainwashed masses. The venues themselves (like the Kremlovski Dvorets in Moscow) aren't conducive to standing up and cheering and getting out of your seat.

I once attended an Eric Clapton concert in the Kremlovskiy Dvorets and the first twenty minutes were horrible. Clapton himself seemed frustrated at the lack of people really getting into the show (which the hall really wasn't suited for). So he walked off stage. Downed all the house and stage lighting. Came back on and began the solo guitar riff at the beginning of 'Sunshine of My Love' which made the crowd go nuts.

If he had been in the Olympic Stadium or Luzhniki, he wouldn't have had that problem.

Just visit a concert of Jethro Tull (coming soon) or Splean and you'll see how people cheer performers Smile espescially if music is great
i've been on the concert of Splean not very long ago in BKZ (bolshoy koncertnyi zal) that was marvelous show... "Старые песни о главном" should have been much more boring Smile so the reaction of people was appropriate
and also advice you to attend Petrovsky stadium to see how team Zenit St.Petersburg is loved by their fans and supporters Wink

Splean sounded quite nice Smile Can you recommend any other russian artists that make people go grazy in concerts (in a positive way)?

In Canada, concerts could be like a big hot box in which you get stoned without smoking drugs.

i was really surprised by that. i am russian and all the concerts that i went to were crazy... Smile what kind of artists were there? Nadezhda Babkina, Fillip Kirkorov,... probably. if yes, then it's just the "wrong" concert. i am not saying they are bad singers, it's just that people on those concerts with those kinda artists are really quiet and all they do is clap hands. i agree you need to go to the rock concert or something similar, that's where people go crazy! Dancing

Hmm. My wife has given me the impression that this behavior is normal and ordinary for Russian concerts. She actually hates American concerts where everyone is dancing in their seats, jumping up, screaming, etc.

I have been to a few concerts of Russian performers here in the U.S., and each time it was that same behavior you describe -- no one stands, except if they want to dance off to the side out of everyone else's way. I actually prefer it that way, I hate standing through an entire concert because I can't see over the jerk in front of me. Bad knee, hate standing too long for anything. Anyway, it may also be that the concerts I went to wouldn't draw a hyper crowd. I am trying to remember the performers -- Valeri Meladze, Agutin & Varum, Diana Gurtskaya, and I forget the last one.

" On March 26 for the first time in Saint Petersburg! The third anual rock-festival "Chart dozen" in the Ice Palace. Among the members are those who were chosen by Nashe Radio's listeners: Agatha Kristy, Umaturman, Splin, Zveri. Four hours of live music! Four full concerts! " http://eng.peterout.ru/news/2005/03/11/chart13/

There is Splean Razz , but the place is still the same... Tickets are btw MUCH cheaper in this concert. We payed 2000 rubles and now same seats cost only 600 rubles...

And still one question; where can I find good websites that tell about the concerts in Russia? http://www.kassir.ru is one and this Peterout other. But any others?

BTW we told about the concert in this website. Unfortunately its in finnish But the are few photos and the artists are po-russki. :
