Why is every body taking the train ? I live in Bruxelles , Belgium and have a big tough car , My friend and I were planning to drive to Irkutsk and Baikal Lake starting May 1st. going via Latvia. Are we daft or just masochists . Surely the roads arn`t all that bad and insect repellant will deal with the mosquitos . So , it will take some time , maybe ten or eleven days. That`s O. K.

Suggestions , remarks , comments and recommendations welcome .

Billy.

Billy,
Let's assume from Brussels it's a 20,000 klm round trip. Your car we'll assume get's 10litres/100 klm. Let's also assume it's 35 roubles to the Euro and Petrol in Russia is 12 Roubles a litre...

You'll need 2000 litres of petrol. That's nearly 700 Euro alone. Then there's food, accommodation blah, blah blah. Also assuming you have cast iron butts you'll get there in 10 days of 1000 klm a day...

The train is about 100 Euro from Moscow one-way and takes four days because it just keeps going 24 hrs a day.

Doesn't look too bad when you consider there are two of you, and you have the convenience of going wherever you want, whenever you want.
You will have a lot of associated paperwork and crap and you will need to be self sufficient for spares and repairs...

Don't try it outside of late spring/summer/early autumn.....

Enjoy

Dear Madame U. Suspect .
Thank you for these few words of wisdom . And thank goodness there is someone out there prepared to bring me back to reality with a little common sense .
What we might end up doing is , rather than opt for either four wheels or the train . a good alternative might be to use the car to cruise gently as far as Nizhny Novgorod and see if we can`t find someone honest there to mind it while we do the next leg by train .
Now to get on with the boring bit like getting visa etc.

I`m starting to like Russia .
Kind regards . Billy.
