In this fast pace going world, borders, alliances, cultures keep on moving...This question is mainly addressed to russians. For you, what is a russian or who is russian?

Is it a person speaking russian without accent?
Is it a person living in Russia?
Is it a person born in Russia?
Is it a slav orthodox?

in russian language there's a big difference between words "russkyi" and "rossijanin", in english there's no difference - russian is a guy who's from Russia and no other expressions
so, well, russkyi - is a person who is etnichally russian but there are some nicetyes. Some people are half russians: for example, mother is a tatar, father is russian, they can consider themselves russkyi(es) or tatars as well. But in most cases Mahmud Aganbekov for example, even if his mother is russian, even if he was born in russia, even if his parents were born in Russia will consider him as azerbaidzhanian for example because of the name and surname Smile
Rossijanin - it's same to english meaning of the word "russian". Rossijanin can be of any nationality (he can be russian) but still he has russian citizenship. Russkyi with ukrainian passport is not rossijanin. Rossijanin can speak in russian with a heavy accent as well Smile

So russkyi is a nationality, rossijanin is a status - just two different words. Foreigners can't understand it without studying russian because in english you have word "russian" and nothing more Smile

In answer to your question, What is a Russian: Napolian was once observing a russian soldier from the distance. the soldier had a loaf of bread, but it was frozen, and try as he might, he couldnt break it into smaller peices. eventualy, the soldier realized that he has no other choice, so he urinated on the loaf, softening it, and then went and ate the bread. Napolien saw and thats when he realized that he wont beat the russinas, and he didnt! THAT IS A RUSSIAN!!!!!

I don't think you can answer that question anymore easily than you could say what an American is.

No, because after he ate some bread, he learned what they did and got pissed off.

There are also thinking differences, or only geographical (or ethnical) distinction?

This appears to me as yet another America-bashing and over-simplification by looking at an obscure language feature, then saying "look! therefore you people are dumb!". {the writer however uses "Foreigners" not "Americans" - how polite}. FYI, one can say things like "American citizen", "American national", "Afro-American", "Asian-American", "American-born", "expat", "immigrant American", "green card holder".... I could go on for a long time elucidating and articulating all the words and phrases that describe every shade and nuances available in Russian.
