I'm due to be travelling around European Russia during this coming summer (St. Petersburg - Novgorod - Vishny Volnochek - Moscow) and am truly looking forward to it.

I also have an old friend's wedding to attend and remember from our school days he was well into his chess (as well as football and rugby).

One of the images I get when I think of Russia is playing chess in the park (apologies if this is stereotypical - too much Bond as a youngster!)

Is it possible to purchase hand made chess sets in Russia - if so where and for how much? Is there any problem exporting craft goods?

Many Thanks

Simon

You can find hand carved chess sets in most all tourist gift shops in St.Pete. There is a very good place to buy the set in a market that caters to tourist across the street from The Church of Spilled Blood near the Hermitage. There is also Gostiny Divor, or the Pasasch, across the street from Gostiny, shopping malls on Neveky Propect. I have bought several in these places.

Oh, you'll find plenty of nice chess sets ranging practically all prices, believe me, especially in tourist shops. They may be a bit pricy but there is a range of them for you to select from.

About customs: ensure you keep all reciepts to show to customs when you leave the country. Chances are that they are not considered valuable art, but to be on the safe side, buy your chess sets in shops which will give you reciepts.

When we were in Ekaterinburg in 98, we bought a beautiful chess set. The pieces are all crafted from a special gem popular in the Urals. It is green and for the life of me I can't recall the name. We haven't given it to Alex yet. We are waiting for a special birthday maybe 12 years old so he will hopefully appreciate it. Get a receipt, wrap carefully and you should have no problems. Enjoy.

Russians play chess in Brooklyn in New York City all over the place too. I have seen a lot of play chess sets in New York stores. If you get tired of dealing with Russian rules and customs, just come to New York and buy it here.
