Here is a question for WTR members and in particular Russians where ever you live.
What makes you most proud of Russia and Russian people, culture etc?
I am not Russian however from what I have experienced and learned from Russian people is that honesty and directness are esteemed qualities. Russian music, art, films come to mind. I would like to hear your individual perspectives and opinions re this question. |

I am proud that Russia is still a country and there's still exist a chance to survive in a modern political situation, however after financial 'reforms' which took place in the beginning of 90's there couldn't have been Russian Federation as an independent and united state...
Also I am proud that we have lots of minerals, so we woun't become like Mongolia in next 30 years. |

| Russia is the largest country on the planet. Russia defeated both Napolean and Hitler with tremendous losses to it's people and survived. Russia has a literacy rate of nearly 100%. Russians can and will survive shortage, famine, war, oppression, and a perpetually inhospitable climate. Russia has a cloistered and illustrious history going back over 1,000 years. Russians have a better chance of being the last survivors on this planet than anyone. These are the toughest people in the world. |

Home of Andrei Tarkovsky and Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
On the other hand, it has one of the world's fastest growing HIV epidemics, has been ruled by one thug after another, almost always had extreme poverty, home of TATU, history of violence to other countries ...but all countries in the world have AIDS, bad music, treat their poor badly and have a few shameful chapters in history, the USA not being the least. |

Hilarious! Obviously you aint a fan of TATU, the one hit wonder band nobody cares about.
Anyway, look no further than a city like St Petersburg for Russia to be proud of something. Quite frankly it could be the most beautiful city in the world for attractions and architecture. Museum's like the Hermitage and Russian Museum rank amongst the finest in the world. The summer palace is spectacular to say the least. Zoology museum there must get a mention to as they have a complete Mammoth on exhibition (the only one in the world I believe). The Mariinsky Theatre and the Kirov ballet company are great. The place just oozes culture with around 100 museums (around 30 I managed to see). |

Hi : ) i would find it a lot easier to say what i LOVE about my country, and, suprisingly, when it comes to what i am PROUD of.. i dont know what to say! B'cos it seems weird to me to say 'we did this, we did that, we are the best in this or that'.. there are some people in Russia who make me feel extremely proud of it, though.. and yes, i do feel good about being a Russian. When asked abt my nationality, i say it with pride. But more than pride, there's this.. absolutely unconditional love that i have for my country, which has become all the more obvious now that i live away from it. I love our old cartoons, which have had several generations brought up on them, i love the way we are with our family and friends, i love nature in the country, with fields and fields as long as ur eye can stretch, brimmed by a line of wood on the horizon.. and yes, i just love our oldish songs.. which never get old.
I also love the language though which I can express my most subtle feelings and thoughts.. smth I just fail to do in english.. cos in the Russian language, there are so many ways of saying the same thing with different touches of meaning.. : )
Have U ever heard this most expressive and colourful language still spoken in some remote villages? : )
Sorry for maybe being too emotional.. I just miss home : ) |

| katya_k, that's why your country is so screwed up. Too much nationalistic pride breeds ignorance especially when the nationalism is illogical. That's how governments manipulate the masses because the people are too stupid to call them on certain actions. Instead, they're content to praise their country. |

| Nationalistic pride does not breed ignorance, ignorance breeds ignorance. Each time I disagree with the government I write letter's to my represenatives, on occasion, even the president, complain, and ask for an explination. Most times they comply, if they don't I write again. If I believe the subject I disagree with is very important, I make an appointment to see my represenative in person, and make sure my complaint is heard. So, I still have national pride, but ignorant, no. It is just a matter of getting up off ones ass and do something instead of waiting for someone else. To much pride is a bad thing, but a pride in one's country, community, or village is a good sign of unity, and support. A person who has no national pride, no pride of community, or village is just an oportunist, leaving himself open to to swing with the most favorable wind. |

| When you are born in a certain country, spend your childhood there you will always find a reason to be proud of that country even if it sucks. |
