Yes customs in every country are usually not very funny but they do their job, it is not paranoia. I am sorry to remind you that everywhere in the world a terrorist attack is still possible especially in USA and Europe, so I am absolutely not surprised nor offended American get my finger prints, by the way I think Europe should do the same.
About targeted checks, well I have to say it is boring sometimes but once again customs do their job, I say that because even I am absolutly not Arabian I look like... I understand customs behaviour, it is not xenophobia but efficient work, just because the big majority of terrorists in the world are coming from muslim/Arabian countries. |

Dr.Fauste - Now why do you say that? I did not bash Canada. I can say many good things about Canada. It is just that Russia is my country of choice. If you do not believe me, here.
Good things:
-Nature not far from large city. (We lived in Ottawa and 30 minutes away was Gatinau park where we could go canoeing or camping for the weekend. In Moscow you have to travel for atleast one hour to get to semi-wild areas.
-Generally speaking, there are more square meters per person in Canada. For example, we owned a 2 story house with 5 bedrooms, one large living room with a fireplace, a large kitchen, a garage, two bathrooms and a big basement that had a pool table and a pingpong table. Here we have a 5 room apartment.
-Canada is more accepting of other cultures. In most cases this is good. This allows people to live in the way that they are accustomed to without having to adjust to another country. In Russia, we are less tolorant of other cultures and they are forced (by society) to assimilate.
Thats all I can think of at the moment.
I don't remember saying that I 'escaped' Canada or that Canada is an 'awful place', I am just glad to live here - are you okay with that?
I hope you reconsider YOUR previous statements.
Vic
P.S. What does 'with one paintbrush and one colour of paint' mean? |

mrwizz (um..nice id), you brought up some good points although I disagree with a couple of your statements. First, it is true, Customs must be on the alert and if it was bad before (the problems), it is worse now. But, that is to be expected. I don't see why you others would be criticizing either the U.S. or Canada regarding the Customs problems. Hey, I have gone on a few trips including one recently, to the States but I excuse the holdups and long lineups because of what has transpired. I would rather them be efficient and meticulous than careless and make a grave mistake.
If you are talking about inconsistencies or poor decision-making such as random searches that are unreasonable (letting a 40 year-old guy with a black briefcase, overcoat and mysterious shades through while a granny is overly searched and held up), then yes, you have a point. But, if you travel over the border and you carry a lot of luggage including electronics or possessions that scream *questionable*, you're going to be delayed whether you look like Joe Tourist or not.
Vic - I don't want to speak for Mr. Holmes, but, I suspect he means 'paint everyone with the same brush' which should be an expression you're familiar with.
mrwizz - I disagree about the fingerprinting. I am against it for the common reason. |

| Where do you come up with crap like this? I read the "bloody" American media daily (New York Times, NY Post and Wall Street Journal). I don't see any of the paranoia you just mentioned. Get a life, dude. |

Don't know where you were in the US, but people hitchhike on the West Coast all the time. Most people have cars, however, so there's not as much need to do it, and not as many drivers are willing to stop. |

It is a bad example, paid hitchhiking in Russia and former soviet republics is only a business to get extra money that s all.
As for USA and Europe, this "business" doesn't exist simply because it is not legal, it would be considered like underground work, that s why in Europe hitchhicking is supposed to be a free deal. |

The United States of Xenophobia
Glad I live in a country where we do not have any fear to speak to strangers and we dont judge strangers by their potential to do something bad. Maybe one day you can enjoy the utopian lifestyle we enjoy here in Australia and New Zealand |
Kiwiguy, I disagree. I am of Asian descent and live in Auckland New Zealand and I actually find the people to be anything but frićndly. People are angry, rushed and rascist here. Every day I see people hassling Asians (teenagers especially who learning insulting phrases in Korean or CHinese and shouting them out, "you don't have a dick" is very popular). People will not help you readily especially if you are Asian. They seem to assume that we can't communicate in English and ignore us if we talk to them. People are angry all the time (just yesterday a bus driver was extremely rude to me because I paid with a $5 note instead of the exact change "this is a fucking bus not a bank, you need to have a fucking think about that before you come back" he said). No one has ever gone to any effort to make me feel welcome in Auckland. I have travelled to other parts of the country however and the people seem so much nicer so it's probably just Auckland, for example some people even smiled at me in the smaller towns. There are a lot less Asians there though. Anyway Australia is probably better. |
