We are thinking of going to Russia for a holiday. My wife is Russian and has been out of Russia for 12 years. (She left when she was 15 or 16) She has to go in on a Russian passport even though she has a South African passport now. She only has a new zagran Russian passport and not the new internal passport (we think her granny in Krasnodar has her soviet internal passport) In her Zagran passport, it says in Russian - 'mark that registration of
> passport in internal
> passport has not been made'
Will she have problems leaving the country? i.e. will customs/passport control at the airpot give her any trouble if she does not have the new internal passport? We have heard that if you have an old internal passport, it is quick to apply for a new one. (Is this true and do you only need the old soviet internal passport to apply for the new one or do you also need a propiska?) |

| I don't get it - why did she receive that new zagran russian passport? If she did not, she could easily get Russian visa into her South African passport and not have any problems. By law, if she is a russian citizen, she cannot get a visa. But since she left so many years ago, if she did not obtain the updated passport she would have been considered a soviet citizen and could get a russian visa. |

Our local consulate accepted a photocopy of her Soviet internal passport to apply for a new Zagran passport. Anyway are there any Russians who can help me out here. I have been told that to leave she will have to apply for a new internal passport in Russia and then register her Zagran passport in her new internal passport to be able to leave. (Although I have also been told that the airport passport control people don't care about the internal passport and she would be able to leave as long as her Zagran passport has not expired.)
What does it take to apply for a new internal passport? Do you just hand over your soviet internal passport to get the new internal passport or do they also ask for a propiska? |

Thanks for the tip oksy28
Where did you get your zagran passport issued - outside or inside of Russia? If you got it outside, did you register yourself at a Russian consulate as a permanent resident living abroad? If you did not do this, does it say in your zagran passport something like this in Russian - 'the internal passport does not have a stamp with respect to the issuance of this foreign/travel passport'. This is what it says in my wife's passport. |

I think the only thing you can do is contact some travel agencies in Russia and inquire whether they can help you with this stamp. It may cost you. And, she may have problems leaving russia. I heard a few dozen bucks solve most problems on the border. So, you can just go on your own risk and hope to pay some fine while exiting russia. Sometimes, I heard, they don't even look carefully at the documents. Or, she can explain the situation, say that she came to visit but she lives with her husband in South Africa, blah, blah...
Now that she got her zagran passport, she is in the computer system and can't get a visa. So, you don't have too many options - ask other people maybe they know what she can do that I don't know.
Here in the US some people got their passports as a matter of pride so they feel themselves Russian citizens but then realized what you just realized - Russia is not a normal country and you're better off travelling on a foreign passport with russian visa in it. |
