Especially this year's Victory day is the BIG V Day. What are everyone's plans, habits, traditions, customs, and etc for that day?

And can we TRY to keep this thread politics free? Rolling Eyes

I have never heard of it reffered to as "V-E" day (assuming you are reffering to Victory Day) If I am wrong, you might aswell stop reading now because I am making a jackass out of myself Embarassed

Well, I am gonna be watchin the parade on TV with some buddies from my place (I'll explain why in a few secs) because there is no way to get close to Red Square with all the vetarans and the little space left over. That I am gonna call and congratulate my grandmother and grandfather who are veterans. Then I will go and swim for about an hour (have to get ready for Russia nationals in Rostov in the end of May) After that, I will head over to Vnukovo and use a Igla-1 SAM to take down George Bush as he takes off. Laughing But really, just hang out with the same friends, probably go outside play football due to the nice sunny weather!(guaranteed)

The reason we are gathering at my house;
This year the aerobatic display teams Russian Knights (Su-27's) and Shtrizhi (MiG-29's) are participating in the parade and they fly pretty much right over my house at a very low altitude (1000ft) As you know, I live near Dynamo and they take off from Zhukovsky AF Base north of Moscow. They have to do a fly-over the Red Square and they use the Dynamo stadium as a NavAid when they are going to the Red Square. Trust me...5 Su-27's and 5 MiG-29's in a squadron flying at 1000ft is impressive! They were doing practice runs (not full formation though, just one at a time - Moscow is restricted airspace) and it was something! It felt as if the windows were going to get blown out! (My windows face towards the center, so their "back ends" are directed right towards me)

To begin, "V-E" day is what is known as "Victory in Europe" day. It was celebrated as an American holiday for about 10 years following WWII. Then again, the US has never been invaded (in recent history), so people quickly "got over it." A nation like Russia that lost millions is obviously not going to get over it; this is a GOOD THING.

I'm somewhat disappointed that I will miss Victory Day 60, but I will (hopefully) be there for Victory Day 65. I want plenty of photos, nonetheless! In the webgame of NationStates (check it out) I run the "People's Republic of Caselonia" and need plenty of Soviet symbols and Victory Day parade photos to make my news items interesting. And before anyone gets too rowdy, it's simply a roleplaying game of running a nation; I like to make interesting news posts and I run Caselonia as I think what "the Soviet Union could've been." It's no reflection on either the nation itself or my personal politics, it's only a game - so please save your hatred for someone else. Wink

I do appreciate not only the idea, but the spectacle of Victory Day and I look forward to witnessing many Muscovite Victory Day celebrations! Enjoy! You won! Very Happy

I think it's gonna be a nightmare trying to particpate or watch any events in person. A lot of things are closed off or so tight on security that you won't get within a kilometer of it anyway, and the rest will be reminiscent of Moscow's 850th anniversary in 97. The laser show on Vorobyoviy Gori ? I went with ten people (who were huddling together in the crowd) and after attempting to venture 3 meters into the crowd there were 3 of us. It was insane.

I think the best bet is to get out of Moscow and enjoy the 4 day weekend or watch the events at home. I live off Tverskaya, and I hear the security checks are gonna be introduced even for local residents on foot.

Anyway, a long weekend is a long weekend. Thank a Vet if you see one. They'll appreciate it.

Watching currently a broadcast about baltic states refusing to celebrate anything since they consider one totalitarism was replaced by another. The only V Day they recognised dates from 1991.

The BBC has an article about that here:

BTW as for me, it isn't really celebrated in the US at all. But i'll observe with my Russkie g/f and other Russian friends who had relatives serve and die in the war. My grampa served but was in the Britsh imperial army.[/quote]

Baltic States have a reason not to be very happy about that day since Stalin for them was not a happy camper. The end of war for them started 50 years of communism which they often associate with lost traditions, languagfe and culture. So, I am surprised to see such lack of understand among many russians why people in the Baltic states feel the way they do. They have their own identitty and their own impression about that time. It's like if someone saves your life but then kicks you in the smomach and steals your wallet - on one havd you feel happy to be alive, on the other, it was not a happy experience Smile I am not from the Baltic, but I have been to Tallinn and Riga many times...

Baltic people obviously don't read history in the same way as Russians do, I also think it is the same in Finland.
Anyway your metaphore is good (and funny too Very Happy ).

Again, Renwan you are telling bullshits.
Russians discriminates themselves, baltic people try to integrate Russian minority but Russians don't want, they still think they are living in USSR, stupid behaviour.
Baltic countries are now independant, so for Russians there are 3 choices :
- accept the integration and learn the local language and be loyal to their new country (I didn't tell that they have to forget their origin)
- refuse and go back to russia but they will not because level of life in Baltics countries is much higher
- refuse to be integrated and being second class citizens and discriminated by definition.

Russian minorities would like to create a state in the state, creating only russian courses univertsities for instance, it is obviously unacceptable, so the better for Russians is forget "the colonizer pride" and try to do their best to become full baltic citizens instead of wasting their energy in resisting and provocating.

Come on, E, that'd be tantamount to staying on-topic and I'm pretty sure I read that that is NOT allowed in the Talk Lounge forums! Rolling Eyes
