will be taking this train (from moscow to mongolia then onto china) at the end of this month with a pal of mine - we are short of cash so have had to go for the cheapo option - and the 2 of us are sharing a 4 bed cabin with 2 other randoms. does anyone have any experience of a similar arrangement? also who allocates the compartments? -

When you buy the tickets, the seat number determines whether you are in the same compartment and whether you have a top or bottom bunk.

IMHO, it is better to take two top bunks because the bottom bunks are supposed to be shared as seats during the daytime. Also, the table between the seats only extends part way and is only usable by two people at a time. If you are on the bottom bunks you are supposed to get up and leave (stand in the hallway looking out the window) for a while to let the top bunk holders use it. If you take the top bunks you are less likely to break the rules of train etiquette.
