You really think that they do? How come they re-elected W, who lost popular vote first time around? I think most Americans are not that different of any other nation, i.e. very defensive about their way of doing things. Sort of like 'well if our electoral college thinks he's the one, than he's gotta be the one' since if one questions whever electoral college is a true representation of people's will, one basically doubts whever the country is indeed democratic, and very few Americans are thinking in these terms, no? |

Plenty of Americans question the wisdom of continuing to elect our President based on a system over 200 years old, especially in light of the new electronic voting machines (read: fraud). The problem is, those of us who are either labeled left-wing nuts, or just don't speak out about it.
America isn't truly democratic, and never has been! This is a representative republic, not a democracy, no matter how much our fearless buffoons want to toss that word around, speaking of how great 'democracy' is, when the United States doesn't even practice it. Does this mean that Americans can't vote, or have no say in their government? No. Because they do (albeit an extremely small one). But this country is not a democracy, and was not designed to be one.
And with regards to the Great Leader (King George W) being "re-"elected, America is actually laboring for the first time under the only President to have never been elected by the people. I voted for George W in 2000 (when I still had my head up my ass and thought somehow that the Republicans were on the right track ) and even then found the recounts not only necessary but abruptly stopped. George W Bush was appointed President of the United States by Katherine Harris' mandate to the Florida Supreme Court (my home and current residence state). This past November, even the EU and UN observers expressed serious concerns about the legitimacy of the election.
Diebold, the company that made all the new electronic voting machines (with NO paper audit, mind you, hence absolutely no ability to recount or double-check), is also one of the biggest supporters of the GOP. The chairman/CEO/whatever of Diebold (I'll look up his name if you want) promised George W Bush a win in 2004, saying something along the lines of, "I'll do whatever I can to make this a reality." Hmmm, including making all of the new voting machines that can't be audited? Whoopsy!
In the days just after the election I knew Kerry would not push for recounts because him and Georgie are fraternity brothers (Skull & Bones). Then I became a little concerned when an Ohio precint found out their (gasp! Diebold voting machines, by the way) votes were tallied as something like 5,314 votes for George W Bush when the precint had only 654 registered voters! This was, of course, quickly hushed up and we never hear any more about it, except from us left-wing nutjobs.
George W Bush has never been elected by the people of the United States, yet he got to be President for two terms. This is not democracy. |
