|
|
| When I'm in Russia I've noticed a few cars with New York plates and when I'm in the USA I've seen cars with Swedish plates...How the heck do people get them from one country to another and is it affordable? It seems to me like it would be incredebly expensive to ship a car on a boat just for a holiday. |

I'm guessing they're one of two possibilities:
1. They're diplomatic cars shipped over here tax free and at the expense of the embassy (State Department).
2. They were shipped over here for resale and the new owner thinks the old US plates are a neat memento.
In either case, they still need Russian plates (if they don't already have them) or transit plates. You can't drive in Russia on your own plates. Just doesn't happen. |

Or its probably stolen. 40% of cars stolen in Europe are quickly shipped east and resold or just driven in Russia and CIS countries. It happens all over the world. If you car gets stolen in the west, 20% chances are its already being shipped out to the developing world where its gets resold or driven. The president of Paraguay was caught driving a BMW stolen from the west. 50% of all luxury cars in Paraguay are stolen.
At least now you can know where to look if your car gets jacked.
Russia's rich fuel luxury car theft racket

| Quote: | | An estimated 1.5 million stolen cars are being driven around Russia. The BMWs, Mercedes, Bentleys, Cherokee Jeeps or Humvees are often stolen to order in western Europe or the US, then brought across eastern Europe's porous borders. |

| Quote: | Police in Norway have tracked down a gang that smuggles luxury cars to Russia through Northern Norway. The Norwegian authorities have worked closely together with the Finnish Police and the Frontier Guard Service.
The Norwegian Police suspect that the gang steals luxury cars in Germany and Sweden, falsifies the documents of the vehicles, and drives them to Russia via Northern Norway.
The Kirkenes Police Department have so far confiscated seven cars with a combined value of EUR 1.3 million.
"In Finland we have had a few isolated incidences of a similar nature. At crossing points between Finnish Lapland and Russia a few stolen cars have been picked up", says Major Erkki Matilainen from the Lapland Frontier Guard. | [/quote] |

Newark - Rotterdam (20 foot container): $1,450
Miami/New York/Houston.. - Bremerhaven: $1,050 [Schumacher Cargo Lines]
New York - Odessa: $1,550 [Accord Overseas]
Jacksonville - Helsinki, RORO: $1,425
Baltimore - Amsterdam / Rotterdam / Le Havre, RORO, ->600 CF: $1,064 [AAA Auto International]
Baltimore/New York - Antwerp/Rotterdam/Gothenburg, RORO, 401-600 CF: $1,200 [UpakWeShip]
RO-RO is Roll-On/Roll-Off, which refers to a special ship that carries
only vehicles. with a 20' container, you can take your personal affects
too. Cost is $/cubic foot. the examples here are geared towards an SUV.
not sure what you mean by "incredebly expensive" |

Incredebly meaning almost the cost of the vehicle and not making it worth the transport, but $1,500 isn't too bad if you're going to be there for a long time. I rented a car in France for a week and it cost me $400, so a month or more is cheaper to bring your own. |

| Of course all those freight rates are in addition to the customs duties which are significantly greater than freight. Import fees can range from 50-100% of the car's bluebook value. Then registration, bribes, technical inspection, etc, etc. Again, if you don't know your way around, it's not a bright idea in Russia |
