I have a UK passport.....will be wandering through europe via Germany and Poland for a few weeks before arriving in Russia for a bit more wandering.So,I don't want to arrange my visa here as I have no idea when I'll get there....anyone got any decent advice on where to get the visa and how?

Get a long 1-year business visa multiple entry from UK and travel with it as much as you want. Also, it may be possibleto get a visa in Baltic countries (Estonia), but I'm not sure. You could also send your passport to the Russian consulate in UK by post, but it will take long and is not very reliable if you're outside of UK.
