Back in 1994 I visited Moscow...I remember going to a church and I believe it was near to GUM DEPARTMENT STORE...it was not St. Basil's

This was a small church with icons inside - local people were attending an actual service in this church

I thought someone told me that there used to be something on the sight owned by Communist Party - that was torn down and this church was built

I thought Lenin Tomb was to the left - GUM to the right - and this church near to Gum.

Can any one help tell me name of church??? THANKS!

Kazanskiy Kathedral (Sobor Kazanskoy Icony Bozhiey Materi on the Red Square)

The church has an interesting story, indeed. It was built by Dmitry Donskoy in the honor of the victory in the war with Polish-Litovian invaders. Officially it was consecrated 15 Oct 1636. There was a wooden church before, but after it burned down, the tzar ordered to use bricks from the Kremlin palace which has been built at that time. In 1928 in was restorated, but all the works were stopped and it was destroyed. Petr Baranovskiy, a famous soviet restorator has drawn detailed plans of the cathedral which made it possible to reconstruct it in 1935.
