Hi folks
Has anyone ever stayed in the Hostel Asia. If so, do you recommend it?
Thanks

Hi Colm,
I'm Michael, from New Zealand.
Yes, my partner and I stayed at Hostel Asia, about 2 years ago.
I thought it was great, and I would stay there again: it was very close to the metro station, which was the main reason we chose to stay there.
The staff were friendly, and the rooms themselves were large (we had a double room, sharing a bathroom with one other double room, which worked out well). Breakfast was not bad either (included / continental).
The place was undergoing renovations when I was there, so it may be even better now, but as a place to lay your head at night, and with easy access to the city on the metro, I'd recommend it.

I stayed at Hostel Asia in February of this year and had no problems whatsoever. It was in the same area my friend lived who I'd gone to Moscow to meet and it was good that it was only 50 metres from the Metro station. I had a room to myself, with telephone, refrigerator, table, ashtray, sofa, wardrobe, bedding and towels. Shared bathroom and toilet. The room was clean, the complete opposite to some of the reviews I'd read before, and friendly helpful staff. Tight enough security and a magnetic card and key to get into your room. Excellent price at only £17.70 a night. There was breakfast included but I can't comment on the quality and choice of food as I never had any. Two bars, both open 24 hours. I found the staff in the cafe bar upstairs much better than in the bar downstairs and the prices were lower. I booked through www.hostelworld.com. I'm going back to Moscow on Friday but will be staying at Hostel Sherstone in the north (near the top of the grey line). Not as convenient as it's a bus ride from one metro station or a ten minute walk from another, but Hostel Asia seems to be completely booked up for the foreseeable future. Have you actually got a booking at Hostel Asia or do you know somewhere that has availability for it?
Thanks |

Thanks Lads.
Sound positive.
I won't be going until November so my exact dates are not definite yet. I'm getting the train from Beijing to Moscow. I reckon I'll have plenty of time to book.

| I've just checked availability at Hostel Asia in November and there isn't any, there doesn't seem to be any for any month in 2006 or 2007 either. Your best bet if you want to stay at this hostel is to contact them directly on +7 (095) 378 0001 or e-mail mikhail_kalinin@hostels.ru Phoning is best though as I e-mailed them a couple of times weeks before I went and they never replied, the reviews I'd read saying they don't reply to e-mail seem true. I'll post details of my experience at Hostel Sherstone on here when I come back after the 9th. The staff seem friendly and helpful enough as they've replied to all my e-mails regarding cost of visa registration (included in the price as at Asia), taxis, currency exchange, luggage storage and safe for valubles (included in the price), but I'll just have to wait to find out what it's really like. Shame it's a bed in a dorm, the prices for single rooms are above £30 a night. Maybe Hostel Asia is fully booked up because it just beats the rest by far! |

| Hostel Sherstone is a good hostel but for anyone that goes there make sure you keep your valuables (cash, photo camera, passport, etc) in the office safe and make sure your bags and suitcases are locked at all times, fastened to something if possible. It might also be a good idea to sleep with your mobile phone down your trousers. I am saying this because of my experience there, I have nothing bad to say about Russia, theft happens everywhere. I enjoyed it there this time so much more than last time in February, Moscow really is a beatiful place full of beautiful girls I was never stopped by the police and managed to find my way on the Metro most of the time which greatly surprised me! Any times I got lost I simply pointed out my station to someone on the map and 9/10 the people of Moscow were very helpful! No problems drinking beer on the streets and even in the city centre, though it's wise to avoid drinking it on the Metro late at night. The bar on the ground floor at Hostel Sherstone was full of prostitutes every night I was there, mainly Ukrainians, and one night a crazy drunken Russian man suddenly threw a champagne bottle at me which which hit my kneecap and left glass everywhere. Fortunately I didn't suffer the slightest cut or bruise but it could easily have far worse. Everyone was calling him crazy and despite me constantly telling him 'ya ne poni mayu' nothing registered in his drunken mind. Security didn't take long to move him after that. So that is my experience as promised. I highly recommend Moscow to anyone thinking about going there, it's better to go as a traveller rather than a tourist as to blend in, try not to dress so you stand out too much. l'll definately be going back, before all the snow comes and the temperature plummets if possible! |

| Russians aren't really into the Hostel thing... they'd usually just prefer to stay in a shitty old intourist hotel. If you're into hostels and 'finding yourself' and all of that jazz, Moscow is probably not the best city for it. Muscovites are elitists and don't respect people who stay at such places (which are called obschejite in Russian.) My advice is that if you're spending the money to get to Russia, don't bother with a hostel. Rent a place through rentline or one of the 'suto4noi' apartments that advertise here. |
