I'm starting a thread where you can post any ideas for new sections of the WTR forum. Just a thread for ideas and to keep things neater.
Just write what you might call the new folder, and give a short description.
As for myself, I think I'd like
1) Politics -- just to discuss Russian politics
2) Shopping in Russia/consumer info -- mostly for the ladies, probably. sometimes it's hard to find certain things... even everyday itms. |

I think it should be organized along the lines of expats.ru since we get the same types of posts and everything.
Destinations: Keep
Special Topics:
Travel adivce should be split into:
Hotels and Accomodation
Automobiles/Motorbikes & Russia
Russia by Train
Using Mobile Phones & PDAs in Russia
Russian weather
Dealing with the Authorities
Sporting activities & Russia
Studying in Russia
Getting to Russia (and this can list Airline companies/airfare ways to get into Russia, etc)
Hot Topics:
Politics and Society
Russian Culture: Music , Movies, Traditions, etc
Food & Liqour
Fashion
Shopping and Gift Giving in Russia
Learning the Russian language
Russian language only (to attract more Russians in here)
Nightlife in Russia (this can talk about theatres, clubs, performing arts, etc)
The CIS countries (and this section should handle posts about Ukraine, Belarus, etc)
Dating and Bride Hunting in Russia  
Talk lounge, Classifieds, Business ideas and solutions, Polls: keep.
And delete the posts in the "Not-relevant" section. I read nearly all them, and they don't serve any puropse to this forum except as a museum of how crazy things were in the past and the sad sorry state of the human race and restart it as the "unmoderated section" with a little disclaimer warning people. |

Currently politics threads are scattered all over Russian People, Russian Contexts and Talk Lounge... thus the suggestion for a Politics folder.
Also we shouldn't start too many folders all at once or we'll just die sorting out all the previous threads!  Some of the topics mentioned can be combined eg. Fashion + Shopping/Gifts |

e: I don't think we are in a need for a complete restructuring of the board. It functions good at the moment. Seems like a waste of time and energy..
But if we do so: Why would this forum be organised in a way similar to expat.ru? If we want to reorganise it we could start to analyse contents of our posts and make a setup of our own.
The huge amount of folders you suggest doesn't appeal much to me. I don't know if we get enough posts to fill them all up. Having many empty folders doesn't make the forum more attractive.
And, for me, it seems like hell to moderate this setup: It requires much more precision on the subjects --> more moving posts around. |

This forum attracts quite a different crowd, if not different types of discussions than expat.ru. The main difference is that it's mostly traveller-geared and there are a lot of Russia first-timers, not for people living and/or working in Russia already.
What we can do is to add a few more folders instead of reorganizing everything. There are some interesting folder topics e suggested eg. weather, sports, studying...
Each new folder idea should have a poll once there's enough interest expressed here. Obviously the dating/scam folder wasn't so welcome as I thought it would, so that's why opinion polls are important. |

Well I wasn't saying that we should completely minic expats.ru, but their structure seemed pretty appealing but you are right, its a different audience, so I don't think that'll work in that way.

Seems to me that theres lots of posts from years back that could fill up some folders. And you know how this forum is; it'll fill up fast. My experience as forum admin ages ago showed me that the emptier the folder, the less intimidated and more responsive people will feel about creating new threads and they will.

You think so? You guys still do plenty of that anyways with the present setup. I think folders that clearly detail what goes where, people would post them there instead of posting a political subject in the Talk Lounge or our notorious dating scam posts that wind up everywhere.
Other than the initial pain of reorganization, I don't think it'll be that bad. This forum isn't as insanely busy, so you wont be overworked. But I appreciate taking in my humble opinions. Whatever solution you guys come out to is fine with me as long as things continue to run as fine as they do. |
