| It is easy to exchange major currencies such as the US dollar and Euro in Moscow. I was wondering how easy it is to exchange other foreign currency? Specifically, is it possible to exchange Hungarian Forints at a regular обмен валюты , bank, or not at all? |

| If I were you, I would not take chance with Hungarian Forints. Bring dollars/euros and credit cards and you will be OK. |

If youy actually read that post Spice, I dont think this person has the opportunity to carry dollars or Euros. He wants to know if his own currency (if so) is exchangeable.
I would just call your local bank or a currency trader like Thomas Cook and ask. Dont change your currency into Euros and Dollars to use in Russia or only to change it into Rubles, its just a waste of time and money. Especially since both currencies, particulary the dollar, isn't doing so hot right now.

If he lives in Hungary he can exchange forints for dollars or euros. I guess he just wants to void double-commision (exhcnage to dollars and then to rubles).
Calling your local bank, as suggests our genius-advisor from San Francisco, in my opinion, is useless since only few foreign banks operate in Russia and you want to make sure you can exchange current any time of the day. Most foreign exchange offices accept and prefer major currency. I am sure you can find a large bank in St Petersburg or Moscow that will exchange forints. But the exchange course is likely to be bad (since very few people use this currency) and it will be hard for you to find that kind of place. There are very few Hungarian tourists in Russia.
Once again, bring your ATM card, your credit card and Dollars/Euros. |

Makes me wonder what it is you do at that "financial institution" you supposedly work for Spice? Mailroom? Janitorial?
As was pointed out in the previous thread, using ATM and credit cards is safer, but it brings fees. If fees is something you dont want or cant afford, dont use your card. This is something you should consider.
Currency exchange rates for Hungary and Russia/Dollar/Euro as of today:
100.00 HUF = 13.9431 RUB
100.00 HUF = 0.406072 EUR
100.00 HUF = 0.484656 USD
So since its apparently more profitable to covert Forints into Rubles, than dollars and Euros, you should exchange your Forints directly into Rubles. |

I am curious what you do, Mr. e, to support yourself living in the most expensive city in the US? You seem to have time for endless quotes and pages of comments on any subject on this forum.
Secondly, your advice is wrong. Because ruble is not a "real" currency, it's probably not even available in Hungary, and if it's available, the fees will kill you. There are many additional restrictions placed on rubles when it comes to entry and exit to/from Russia. No reason for penny-pinching - dollars/euros are the best. One can withdraw dollars from ATMs in Russia. All ATMs in St Petersburg I used offered a choice - withdraw in Dollars or Rubles. |

Speak for yourself Spice, for someone who replies as fast as you do.
And my question remains: you seem to have a very little concept of numerics, math, currency exchange, or any economics related info which leads me to wonder what it is your doing at that "financial institution" if you actually work for one.
BTW the most expensive city in the US is New York.

I dont think this person cares about whether or not the Ruble is a real currency (whatever that means) but hes more concenred about whether or not he can exchange Forints in Russia and if its worth it. Nor is he trying to import Rubles in and out of the country either. Where you got that from is beyond me.
The currency exchange rates that I originally posted and will repost again say that it isn't particualry smart, or prudent to change from Forints into Dollar and Euros and thats its more prudent to change it directly into Rubles.
Sure you could do what you advised, but you're a US citizen with a US bank account and a US credit card . And you probably went to a US bank as you said that you did in an previous post. What if this person isn't one? Or has no such luxury?
Stick to the "relativism" nonsense that you were flaunting earlier. You come off as more credible that way.
