This has gotten rather nasty. That was not the intent of this thread. I suggest that people chill out a little. I will do my part and refrain from any negative commentary about Russia since I made my points and do not wish to be offensive and disrectful. Believe it or not, my intent of discussing my recent impressions was and is not a personal vendatta re Russia. Smile

e: Can you stop repeating yourself? Seriously, your repetition and endless quotes and links are making me dizzy. It's quite depressing to see the same nonsensical remarks again and again.

cyndy: Why are you blaming yourself? Are you supposed to be the "yes" person like in old Soviet times and say how great russia is? You went to St Petersburg, there were many things you did not like and it matches this forum topic quite well. The topic is "Russian Contexts, Myths and Truths". Why would you be penalized for telling the truth?

I was just getting disheartened how offensive people seemed to be toward one another. I am not trying to be a yes girl or blame myself for posting my impressions or experiences on this thread. I agree it is a relevant and interesting thread. I was trying to diffuse the negativty, that's all.

Well I realise now that Russia-bashing is better than people-bashing... so by all means...

Related to Soviet mentality- I must admit that I enjoyed seeing the various Soviet souveneirs for sale through out my visit. I bought my father who is half Russian, a sharpka, the grey woolen one with pull down ear flaps and a Soviet red star in the center. He loves it. My husband bought a Soviet pocket knife/lighter with Lenin's picture on it, for my brother in law. I can appreciate all of that memorabilia. Natasha gave me an old Russian camera and a silver cup older that is quite nice.

That sounds pretty cool, Cyndy! So, is that stuff cheap or expensive?

I'm sure if I was in Russia, I would want to bring back that stuff. I like historical souvenirs like that. Real stuff, not fakes. The genuine goods.

The only thing I'd wonder about is what Customs might do if they were to discover I have a bunch of Soviet souvenirs. lol

They'd think you were just another 'silly tourist', bringing worthless fakes.... like they can tell if it were real, right? Wink

Seriously, there are a lot of real but not-very-valuable items you can buy back. I like pins, collar pins, lapel pins etc. Looking at the back of the pins will give you an idea if they're real. (There was a good website about how to tell the real stuff from fakes, but I lost the URL!) There are a lot of cheap ones, but as you get to the popular but rare ones like the KGB pins, certain war medals, badges for a high ranking army officer etc. the price goes up and up.

Genuine goods are possible to buy, but anything that is consider antique (I believe it's 50years old, 100 years old items can't be brought old) you may have to pay customs, or prove you bought it from an authorized dealer (keept he reciept!). However these things are often found in expensive shops for tourists...
