Yes. And it is on the steep and rather one-sided rise, if you care to pay attention. Moscow news empires are too preoccupied with domestic issues re:2008, and imho rightfully so: besides, Iraq and Chechnya would force both parties involved to be within PC limits of reserved criticizm and news grey-out (as in very selective back-page representation).
Strangely enough I suspect that if it was Cold War still, finishing their respective special interest wars ahead of CW opponent could give both countries enough political leverage to make it *highly* desirable... |

The other thread actually did answer your question. We discussed it throughly in there. American news outlets only cover what directly concerns them and Americans.
The UK is the US's closets ally #1 trading and investment partner, and i'm not even going to get into the historical or cultural links. There are thousands of American expats living in London and millions of American tourists visit the UK and London yearly. So hence why bombings in London get more soundbytes than the recent terrorist attacks in Chechnya and India.
But no Americans died in Beslan or the theatre siege --so its who cares. Russia doesn't directly affect American affairs and policy anymore --so its who cares. 700 have died in an Monsoon in India over the past week. But because, America or Americans were directly affected by it --who cares, but an American teenager gets kidnapped in Belize and there's a media frenzy --even though hundreds of foreign tourists get kidnapped there each year.
See the difference? |

Russians have already formed a formal diplomatic protest to that interview and are planning lawsuits against ABC.
But I bet a real Russian tit-fot-tit reponse to that interview would be for an Russian network interviewing Osama Bin Laden or Al-Zaquari.  |

Ok, but all none of the news outlets linked to in this thread are American. Pravda sure as hell isn't, and neither are the Moscow or St. Petersburg Times. They are English-language, yes, but not American.
And I'll take E's observation above further. American news reports on what it thinks will garner ratings, whether or not it directly affects Americans. That's why our media is in such a shambles these days and you actually have to work to find a grain of truth in television media, and you have to work to find decent writings in print as well (Thomas Friedman used to be my main journalistic hero and now he's retreated into Head-in-the-Ground Fantasy Land *sigh*).
It's obvious how much I cared about News World Int'l since I gave it its own thread eulogizing its existence. It goes off the air forever at 11:30pm tonight and I, for one, will watch the final broadcast whether at home or at the pub (luckily they get NWI at the bar I call home).
Here's to the doubtful return of quality journalism - but I'm gonna do my part in trying to bring it back. |

I do heartily sympathise init6 with your predicament.
Of course, being an intolerably smug Brit, I know that wherever I go in the world, I shall be followed by the greatest representatives of their respected media, the BBC and the Guardian. Yes, both of these championed at the recent 'internet oscars' and therein lies the point. I have stopped watching the (BBC's) news on TV, and have stopped buying the paper, and now listen to more music in the car because I get better, in-depth news and current affairs coverage on their respective websites.
Now, I know it's subscription access, but (say) the New York Times has a pretty good site. I don't know your detailed predujices and opinions but there must be a couple of news agency / broadcaster sites that will fill the void with suitable brain fodder.
Hope you get it sorted. Maybe you'll just have to go native (European). |

| I should add that, since my personal focus is now in/on Russia, I am indeed enjoying the slant on British news as seen by Pravda, Novosti and Mosnews. That, and all the domestic Russian stuff. |
