1) Not exaggerating. George W Bush and neoconservatives are the biggest threat this nation has ever faced.

2) A standard cop-out. If it's not ridiculously reactionary it's "biased to the left." Yeah, the liberal media is the problem. Rolling Eyes

3) Fair enough about Brown. I've watched FOX News and that's why I don't watch it anymore. Brit Hume is the most decent guy on the channel and he could be a real journalist if he jumped ship. I've actually heard people criticize Hume for being "too left of center." Laughing

4) They don't give away the receiver, which costs at least $150. Some of us don't work in the financial sector. And while I have cable, I don't pay for it. And no, I don't steal it. Besides, I don't spend enough time listening to the radio to PAY for it. NPR is decent, but it's almost wholly domestic, about which I do not care. Did you ever wonder why intellectuals and educated people tend to be left-wingers? Wink

init6: I did not blame "liberal media". CBC is biased and that has nothing to do with this "liberal media" rap that is popular in conservative circles in the US. Their programs are often not just anti-Bush or anti-war, which is understandable, but are often simply anti-american. It's a virtual monopoly in Canada and as all monopolies controlled by the government it is reactionary and stale...

The receiver for the satellite radio can now be purchased for less than $70-80, and that is one-time cost. Have you ever purchased a TV? It's even more expensive...

If you don't have $10 to spend a month while living in the USA, you should seriously think whether you've made good career choices so far. It's double of what you'd pay to rent a video or DVD at Blockbuster. Stop this nonsense - it's not that expensive.

Yeah, stay away from FOX News. They tend to embellish on the truth for more ratings. I like news that tells the facts and do not sway to one side or the other. I know how I feel about politics I don't need them to tell me other wise.
NPR will tell you the mistakes they made over the air and correct them so that you get the best news possible. I heard from the grape vine that they too might be shut down as well. Evil or Very Mad

NPR is boring, that's why few people watch it. I stand by my comment that Special Report at 6 EST on Fox News is the finest news program on TV right now. I watched it yesterday and was once again impressed with the level of coverage and analysis. Don't critisize something you've never seen. It's a soviet way of approaching reality.

/shrug I don't think my news needs bell and whistles in order to keep me entertained; as long as they keep me well informed I’m happy. It is news; it is suppose to be boring.
NPR on the radio or any number of talk shows is good news. I like news where people can call up and ask questions.

Actually NPR is the 3rd most highly rated and most listened to radio program in the US. Not to mention its won far more awards in terms of journalistic excellence and ratings than Fox "News" anyday and I agree with you Taula 100%. I'm not looking for entertainment in my news or whether or not its "boring", I want to hear the news and be informed. The fact that US news agncies seem to be more concerned with entertainment and the "bells" and "whistles" is why the US media outlets suck so bad in the first place.

Where do you guys get all this propaganda? What enterntainment? The Special Report on FoxNews is a great and serious news program and you should all watch it daily at 6pm EST. NPR pales in comparison.

OK, for one thing NPR is a RADIO program, which is not easily compared to a TELEVISION program. Second, I peruse upwards of 20 media outlets, print and video, per day in search of the truth. You watch one or two. So who's the one getting "propaganda?" Wink

I would literally pee myself laughing if someone tried to tell me that FAUX News was so "high quality" that watching it was a good substitute for reading papers from across the world (via website, of course). Laughing

You can do it all - I read newspapers in the morning when I commute to work on a train and watch the news programs in the evening. Very soon El Casey you will be living in Moscow confined to Moscow Times and censored TV programming approved by the government. Cherish your freedom :)

You got me there, Spice! Cool Since I leave tomorrow, it just sort of dawned on me all the things I take for granted now that I basically won't have access to. I'll still have CNN.com and the like, but until I get an internet connection at the dorm or go to an internet cafe I can't even access those.

On the other hand I'm really looking forward to getting functional enough to struggle through reading Izvestia and so forth. I know most of the Russian papers are state-owned, but I tend to stay away from opinion columns as it is, since I like "wire" news and stuff that's fairly objectively written.

Either way, I think I'm going to really enjoy my time there and learn more than I could ever hope to by staying in the West (about Russia/former USSR, I mean). I won't be completely gone by this time tomorrow, but I'll be walking into the airport. Maybe I'll even watch Fox News in your honor at the C-class lounge, Spice! Laughing

Actually, most Russian newspapers are not state-owned and are more or less independent. In this new era some of them are probably hesitant to critisize the government too much, but they are, at least oficially, free.

English press is available for you to read there. I don't think you will want to read Izvestia even if you are able to :)

I think you will have fun in Moscow, at least at times. For an American from Florida spending the whole year in Moscow, Russia should be an unforgettable experience. I hope you are going to report on this forum anything that is worth reporting. I bet you will have a lot of stories to tell.

I bet the worst part of your experience is going to be winter. The stereotype is right regarding Moscow. It is really cold over there during the winter months. So, make sure you dress appropriately to avoid visits to the doctor...
