Kind of like Russian soul, and perhaps this feature is one of the best qualities. There is a mystery there and differences, but ALSO REAL beauty and life. I did not miss out and seeing and experiencing this, trust me. like all places nd things in life however there is ying and yang, who can dispute this? So while I very well know that this forum is intended for anyone and everyone interested in Visiting Russia, it is not fair to only potray a rosy picture for tourists. Like all countries, Russia has its good bad and ugly side. If we are forbidden or ostracized to discuss anything remotely negative than aren't we still livin in the good ol USSR !

Some people quested how negative you were about your trip as if there was almost nothing good in St Petersburg except Hermitage, vodka and food. Is being overly critical and negative the American way? I would the first thing that comes to mind when one visits a large and beautiful city like St Petersburg (or any other historical city) is the beautym the architecture, etc. and then one can list many negatives that any tourist would have to deal with. I was almost assaulted on the street in Amsterdam and lived in the smallest hotel room I ever stayed in in my life for about $100/night, but if someone asked me what I thought of my trip there, I would mention beautiful cobble-stone streets, canals, architecture, charm, etc. You have to have your priorities straight, and that has nothing to do with "good old USSR"...

I am an honest person and don't believe in sugar coating everything to gain popularity. Actually this trait is more Russian than American, because most Americans will smile and pretend everything is fine and dandy. Most Russians are far more candid, wouldn't you agree? While St. Petersburg is a beautiful city, it was not the greatest trip for me ok. If my experience offends you or anyone, that is your problem. You only seem to think I had a terrible time there which was not the case. In fact the story that I just sent to Mediashark I think highlights far more positive experiewnces than negative re my visit in Piter.

I agree that it is worthwhile to see the full picture and of course this means good bad and indifferent. Iam not indifferent wouldn't you agree! It is interesting to me also that after getting back from our trip, I find it easier to put it in perspective. So Spice you should smile knowing that I am not the evil spreading ghost of Piter. Sorry I can't meet you in September. I am sure you will have a lovely trip!

An Israeli friend of mine was in the same position (ie. he immigrated to Israel in the late 1980s). He came back to Russia about 7 years ago and got Russian citizenship 2 or 3 years ago, while keeping his Israeli citizenship. Apparently, though, it's a very time-consuming process so he ended up having to 'buy' it at a high price. Can't help you out with the specifics, sorry, but it should be possible. Your best bet would be to come to Russia for a while and talk to people here.
