We are a group of three (maybe five) people, who are planning to make the following trip next summer:

Go to Altai mountains (either by plane or train, depending on our budget and time), spend a week and a half there trekking, then cross the border to Mongolia and spend a week or two riding across the steppe and checking out the scenery.

Questions:

1. Is it at all possible to cross the border to Mongolia without problems somewhere in the Altai region? I can see on the map that there's a road there from Gorno-Altaisk through the mountains to Mongolia, so that would seem to be the obvious way. Has anyone here done this before?

2. Where is the best place to get the visas to Mongolia? (We are one from Sweden, two from Romania, and perhaps another from Sweden and one from Australia.)

3. What else might be important to think about?

Thanks very much in advance! Smile

1) You shouldn't have any problems crossing the border there.

2) Sweden or Moscow, but Sweden is better, I think less queues.

3) Read http://waytorussia.net/Altay/
