I am looking for advise on how to travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow on 19.12.05. What is the best transportation mean (bus, train, plane) and is somebody maybe travelling the same day and would like to join me?

Looking forward to your responses

Forget bus. St.Petersburg-Moscow road is three lanes and not too good. Slow and tiring journey.

Train would be ok. For about $60 you get a pretty comfortable ride, the cheapest would be around $10, the most expensive about $100.

Plane is a good thing is when you really are in a hurry. Going to an airport will cost you about $30 (the airport is in the outskirts of town), or you'll have to have a local help you with navigating in the city (there also are
shuttle buses, but you have to use Metro to get where you can find them). Sheremetyevo in Moscow is also not quite close to the Kremiln

A plane is about $100, I believe. Business people use it because it kind of saves time.

Many thanks Leonid!

Where could I get the tickets for the train? Only on-site or also in advance from Germany?

Online. I believe there's also a company called trans-sputnik, that has agents in a couple of european countries and is an agent for among other services, traintickets. But if they're not located near your home city, i think you might as well order them online.

Yeah, if put it off till December 19th you're likely to find all tickets are sold. Can't you just ask the people you're visiting to buy you tickets locally in advance? I've never heard of ordering train tickets online here in St.Petersburg but I'm not really a great traveller.

the trains from moscow to st pete n vice versa leave everyday probaly around 20 times a day or more. so no worries. just buy your ticket when you first wake up in the morning to get the times you want.

On December 19th?
Sure why not. After all, these trains are not the only option. You don't get your ticket, you can always go to Moscow hitchhiking.

Many thanks to all.

I will try my best (either through an agent or possibly through somebody on-site). Unfortunately I am not visiting somebody personally, but I am there on a business trip.

All the best

I'll be going to Moscow myself very soon (October 29th), I'll find out if I can get a ticket for you. Last time I bought my ticket you had to show your passport, but that was pretty long ago. I'll find out and let you know.

Leonid.
