| I've read somewhere on this site that only foreigners wear fur hats in Russia. So what do Russian people wear on their heads then? |

Foreigners like buying those fur hats for souviners, and since they do actually serve the purpose of keeping your head really warm, they wear them.
Middle aged and senior people often wear fur hats. Children sometimes do.
Young people think fur hats are out of fashion. But some people do have the look to go with that, and a fur hat can be quite stunning. Wool caps or some other headgear that you normally see in Europe or the US/Canada will be quite common among them.
A young adult foreigner would then almost be picked out by his fur hat. But hey it's so cold Russians will forgive you... |

| Thanks for that. So if I don't feel the need to look young and trendy, it's fine to wear a fur hat. That's good, I always quite fancied having one! |

| When we were in Russia last winter I noticed alot of men wearing stocking caps. But make sure it's a black one. That's all I saw and I acually bought one there to. And a fur hat, but I'm not a young person. |

| I've worn trooper style (what we call the Russian style fur hat) for years but not made of fur. Wool and sheepskin. Also stocking caps and front brimmed hats with ear flaps. |

Is there much difference in temperature between Minnesota and Moscow in winter?
Where I live (Berlin), it doesn't get anywhere as near as cold as in Russia but I generally wear a hat in winter. I usually wear a black beret, since it always looks chic and goes with everything. You can also tuck your hair under it if it isn't looking the best and you still look good I also have a couple of 1920's style cloche hats. I love those and they're fine for here. In the countryside I might go wild and wear a POM POM hat! I think if I was in Russia in winter I would sacrifice fashion for warmth.
The problem with a lot of hats is they squash your hair and ruin your hairstyle so your hair sticks to your head when you take your hat off, like those stocking caps people have mentioned. That's why I like berets too, they don't blow off your head in the wind but they don't flatten your hair either.
Bet if I go to Russia I go in spring or summer though .... |

I want to get a big fur hat but also want to be kind to animals. Are most of those hats made from bears? Because I don't think I could wear a bear on my head.
I used to have a "coon skin" cap when I was a kid (racoon fur with a tail atached to the back, like Davey Crocket) but now I feel guilty for ever buying it
As for Russia in winter: I live on about the same lattitude as Moscow so I'm used to identically cold winters, but that doesn't mean I want to visit Russia in January; I'd rather go in the warm summer and save the cold for when I'm at home. |

Minnesota's climate and Mocsow's are very similar. We run about 5 degree farenheit warmer and but our weather seems a bit drier. Not as much snow and rain from what I see when I check Moscow's weather on the internet.
I think most Russian fur hats are made of rabbit, muskrat, nutrine or mink. I don't think many are made from bear. Some are also faux fur. |

Want to be kind to animals, wear natural fur... even sacrificing a mink or sable is better than building a horrid factory on top of their homes to produce synthetic materials and pollute the environment with nasty chemicals...
Wool should be fine for you I hope... |

| I whole heartedly agree with you mediashark. Most of these animals are raised for this purpose, just as a cow or pig or chicken or what have you is raised for meat. And it's a nature renewable resource I might add that doesn't use chemicals to achieve it's results. |
