You are absolutely right, if you go to India and stay there for any longer than 4 months, you will get the shits. Or worse. This one time, I got the vomiting equivalent of diarrhea and spent the next three days wishing for death. On the first day, I vomited 13 times in 3 hours!...6 years later, I have still not broken that record. |

Thats disgusting!! I always use to dread getting stomach bugs simply because id be vomiting every 45 minutes even if it was just bile! I wouldnt go to any really dirty countries, the sickness factor is a major turn off! |

The only time i got sick in Russia over one month was from...not drinking enough water (a few days after crossing the Gobi)
I cared to buy "mineralskaya vada" tho and eat lots of borshes (liquid food) |

Wow, you will not travel much...
Dirty countries are not all bad, if you have travelled before. When you become a seasonned traveller, nothing will bother you. But you have to start easy. I have been here in Afghanistan for 16 months so far, and ...nothing. We drink water in bottles, but brush our teeth with tap water...
Each house has its own well, and its own septic tank a few meters apart. And they are only holes in the ground with no concrete...
Russia is known for its very good sanitary installations, as good as America or Europe...
Do not worry about water there... |

Well I'm still running the tap water through the filter at least or just boil it... my appliances (save for the kettle) and plants are happier with that.
To comapare with that my mother was one paranoid woman about water. Back in Singapore she filtered and then boiled the water--wouldn't let us kids drink from the tap and our filtration system is top-rate! Needless to say we grew up with a weak stomach... |

F.G.,
did you ever go to Tijuana?
Apparently people get quite sick just crossing the border... |

I've eaten food off the street in Thailand, and it was just fine (and was so good as to be worth the risk of getting sick from! ).
If you're uncertain about the hygiene standards of a place, then Egyptian rules should apply:
1. Don't drink anything that hasn't come out of a bottle.
2. Avoid vegetables.
3. Avoid meat that may be undercooked.
Not that I've had any such problems in Russia: everything's been great... |

Now this is only a theory but I wonder if you could safely eat and drink anything you wanted in dirty areas just as long as you chew on a couple garlic cloves, and then suck on a couple lemons as well, right after consuming bacteria laden food and drink? |

Gee...interesting theory. I've never heard that one before...
I doubt that would work to tell you the truth. Garlic and lemon juice work quite well as disinfectants, but I don't know that they could counteract the amount of bacteria that can lurk in food and water... |

All those places are in Siberia surrounded by huge areas of wilderness. There should be no problems at all with the water. I've been in Ekaterinburg twice and I had no problems drinking the water. You are going to be eating unfamiliar foods so this can sometimes cause minor digestive problems because your gut is not set up for digesting them. Similar to what happens when a person eats no fruit at all for months and then gets digestive upset in the summer when they try fruit. Fortunately, Russian food shops all sell yogurt, kefir and bio-culture drinks like Activia. Eat some of this everyday and your digestion will be fine.
And the advice about children is ridiculous. Millions of kids live in Russia and they are as healthy as anywhere else. |

Those kids are use to the environment in which they were born into! It is stupid to compare a local child to one that is just visiting. Plus you would have to be a pretty bad parent to knowingly bring your child into a situation in which you would expose them to potentially violent sickness. btw food poisoning and digestive trouble, are two separate issues! I doubt the person who has spent the whole night vomiting can even think about eating yogurt! |

Fire_G. you keep amazing me! You discern people's opinions just like that and are not afraid to exress your point of view!
waytossed is known (at least to me) for giving funny advice to people. Every time I read his/her posts I keep thinking: "This guy got it all wrong."
Anyway, I am not saying this to cause any problems, but anyone who says discussing scammers should be left alone on this forum and then he/she gives the advice to an american kid: Go and join the russian army, or compares local kids to visitor's kids has definitely not thought through his/her opinions about things. |
