I've been to Paris a couple of times. It has it's charms, but it's certainly not my most favourite place. I found Russia a lot more interesting. The 40 million people that visit Paris might actually be a good reason to stay away from it |

Spicey, because people who have visited Russia has said to me to go there because it is a beautiful place...the people are warm and passionate and that is what I want to experience even if it just to go on vacation...I want to see the "White Nights" and experience that also...I have talked with Russians in my own town and they are the nicest people...I have never heard people talk about Paris or another country, oh yes one more Australia is suppose to be a great place to visit..but, I have overheard people in my work place and customers talk highly of Russians and I want to exprience such a wonderful place to see for myself....when Russians invite total strangers in their home something has to be said for that..it tells about them and they are open and warm hearted people...spicey why wouldn't I want to go there?.... |
People don't talk about Paris? Maybe you're sorrounded by people who have not been anywhere. I visited Paris 3 times and found it to be a very beautiful and charming place. Certainly, in terms of service, cleanliness and beauty is it way ahead of any Russian city - in my opnion. I wish you well and hope you have a chance to visit Russia and I hope you enjoy. I would advice you to aslo visit one or more Western European countries on that trip (since you're crossing the ocean anyway). Frankly, I think you have inflated expectations. Please remember that Russia was a socialist country just 20 years ago, and it shows - especially outside Moscow's center. Regarding the "nicest" people, I actually heard from most Americans that visited Russia that people seemed very cold to them. It's because in Russia, vittually no one smiles at you. People take it as a sign of unfriendliness. Also, don't expect people that service you at hotels and shops to be nice - customer service is notably bad. But if you get to know some Russians personally, they are warm and passionate people. That is true. On my last trip to Russia, I was actually forced to spend a day in Paris (missed the connection). I have to say that the contrast between Paris and St Petersburg is still huge. I met many of my old friends in St Petersburg and city is filled with memories for me. So I was very happy to be there. |

| MrSpice: I have to agree with you completely on Russia. I think your views are very realistic regarding visiting the country. Maybe it was because I had built up the notion of visiting Russia for so many years, but I was let down overall by the experience. True, there were a lot of beautiful and interesting things that I saw, but in general, there were quite a few things that were disappointing, depressing, etc. My husband, who lived most of his life there, is relieved to leave after each visit there. He loves and misses his family, which is why he returns often to see them, but he is always very happy to return "home" to the US. |

Spicey....I am agreeing with you...I am not going to live there now, I was considering it but not now...I am not completely an idiot here...I know that I might be strongheaded on Russia...I am not expecting alot anymore since everybody seems to have had a not so great time there....my heart says go for a week or two...I wanted to see the country..and perhaps I will go see a few more countries while I am there....I see that people in this forum are only giving me the political side of Russia...I cannot believe that the entire country of Russia is unfriendly....Russia is a big place....correct me if I am wrong..... |

Hey JoJo, I hope you didn't think I was in any way trying to deter you from going. I definitely think it's a place one should visit, and I'm very happy for the experience, I'm just saying that I think I built it up so high that it was impossible not to be let down.
I do have a lot of great memories about going there, but let's just say I'm excited about visiting other places (England, Holland) before going back |

| Natural beauty of landscapes can be found all over our planet...and people vary every where too. I find Russian people to be very warm and friendly once you get in with them...but isn't this true everywhere else also...it's called making friends. Russia is very depressing as the standard of living is much lower...but keep in mind and here is a scenario that was raised on a trip to Mexico with a mexican friend of mine. The little 6 year old kid who pan handles chicklets or juggles for you to get some money at the border...if you notice the kids are actually pretty happy. Reason being is that they don't know any different. So when we Americans go there and we see this kid who at 3:00 am is working to get money...we think how aweful! But in reality he is just doing what he knows and he is happy. So I had this conversation with a russian friend of mine the other day...who now owns an expensive condo in the most expensive area in SD-La Jolla. She was telling me that she grew up until she was 18 in a one room apartment. 6 people lived there...and that they didn't know any different so it was ok. It's only now that she has lived on her own and has had her own place that she says no way would she do that again. But at the time it is just the way of life. In russia I saw so many disturbing things...and I saw things that could be changed so easily and for the better. Russia is playing catch up-studying History Russia suffered huge losses in the Crimean war because it failed to keep up to speed with western europe. I only know that once russia now gets up to speed that it needs to keep up with the rest of the world. And this is why Russia failed so many times in the past-it was always a backwards state. I think that Russia has always focused on two cities which are like a vaccuum which sucks everything out of the rest of the country...Moscow and St Pete. Russia needs to put it's energy in the other regions. Which I think is going to happen. Tourism will play a major part as it will open up so many regions. Like Sochi...it will be huge if the Olympics go there...but also it will ruin how things are there now. |

No, you didn't deter me...I just won't live and work there now....I had a change of mind for personal reasons...but, I am going to visit...I want to see the positive side of Russia and then I will hold my breathe and see the negative...but, I have always been able to handle the bad with the good...I never back out of something when the going gets tough...because I am tough and the tough gets going.. ..so I will still see the place that is in my heart so I won't be let down too much because I have been prepared for it...thanks to some in the forum....I know what to expect....when I go over there...I will take back some memories with me when I come back to the US... |

Well, I may be wrong...but, I was referring a man from anywhere in Europe, whether is is bulgarian, Spanish..ect...thats' all....as far as languages...I don't know...my answer was to Melissa Cato on her looking for someone other than American...so I just said European...thats' all...
What is and What is not European?...don't know much about Europe...never been there...European culture?....anybody outside of the USA....sorry, if I am wrong...but you are asking a women who has never been anywhere outside of America...I have an interest in going to Europe with an open-mind and ready to meet new people from other places besides mine.... |
Errr... yes...now I definitely understand why I couldn't understand Americans before this! It is just very puzzling fir me to hear people speaking about culture as "european" and saying that people are "Europeans". I can understand Europe in temrs of geography, but otherwise, well, not so well. It is just the very unhappy fact, that most of European countries have relatively little in common. It is just too diverse. And besides, at least where I've lived and studied, we always speak about Central Europe, Western Europe, North Europe, Baltic States, East Europe, South Europe, Mediterranean, Benelux-countries, Balkan, Scandinavia, Pyrenees, Caucasia etc. etc. If any of my friends in my home town said that they were going to marry a European guy, it would sound nothing but super funny and kind of posh and bragging about it. |

Yes in America we speak of the broad term of European...meaning from europe. But we do know that europe consists of many different countries that each have their own cultures and subcultures. Certainly Spain is far different from Germany...which is far different from Italy...which is far different from Russia. Yes we understand this...but if you are a man from Europe then unfortunately you are a "European Man". When I travel to central america I do not say I am from America...I say I am from the United States. When I was in Russia I said the same thing...it was the Russians who referred to me as Amerikanskii. ANd trust me JoJo knows and understands what Europe is about...as do most Americans. And remember most of us are from Europe... |

I am not thinking that you or Jo Jo wouldn't understand, I am just saying, that the word European is not used here as it is used in States. And yes, it is true, that in Russia you even might hear people saying "on govorit po-amerikanski", but to me it just sounds hilarious when people make such misstakes! |

I spent 3 months in Eastern Europe a few years ago and had an amazing time.
I will be in Moscow from the 7th to the 11th kind of hanging out.
Spending 4 days in Kaliningrad before that visiting a friend.
