Good news: the new version of Way to Russia train tickets is up and running.
It has a completely different concept to any Russian train booking system you have ever seen. The major trains are listed and the net Russian railway prices are given for them. Some prices for the most popular routes were updated during the last week, so it's as up-to-date as it can get.
Once you select the trains you like, you are proposed an option to purchase these tickets through a train station (this is obviously the cheapest but the most complicated way) or to use one of the approved vendors, who are able to sell train tickets online. If you select the first option, just fill out the form and you will receive an e-mail with your itinerary. If you select the second option, you will be contacted within 24 hours by a train ticket company representative. |

So, what a perfect post. just what i need .
Now, has anyone test this kind of order online yet ? and results? as my problem with Russian "mafia" consulate in Sweden, i have to take the hard way, by stay in Moscow 1night only and next day take the train. therefor i was worry about purchase the ticket 1day before depart moscow, could this be a problem?
if i order online at wtr, how safe is this? i saw the lines "free delivery in Moscow" and what if i come the hotel and no ticket shows up.....?
oh btw, can travellers buy/order trans-sib ticket from Tallinn? coz i gonna stay there too and maybe it's easier for me to purchase the ticket there (at least they can speak little english right)? |

Thanks WTR! The service looks great, easy to use, and it comes just in time for planning my summer trip. |

I haven't seen much feedback yet on the new train ticket ordering system, so here's my experience this week.
I was looking for a one-way ticket from Moscow to Novosibirsk, 3rd class. I started looking about 2 weeks before departure date.
I selected the train on the WTR reservation system, and chose RussianRails as the agent. The price stated on WTR was US$ 75 (plus 15-20% for the agent). In a short time, I received an automatic email (from WTR support I think) that my request could not be sent: "failed delivery, final attempt," etc. So, I tried to order tickets directly through the RussianRails.com site. I received an automatic response, but never got a real reply.
A few days later (it was a weekend), I got a notice from the WTR Support system. The agent who contacted me was Express to Russia. They quoted me a price of $337 (2nd class) and said that 3rd class is not available (sold out, perhaps?). I replied, changing my travel date and suggesting 4 different trains. A reply came 2 days later, with a price of $197 for 3rd class, one-way. So, I think a round trip would cost me about $400? I expected about $200.
So, I went to Sibir Airlines today and purchased a round-trip ticket for US$315. It took about 15 minutes to choose my flight and pay with credit card. I really wanted to take a train journey and feel the vast expanse of Russia, but it doesn't make sense to me. Why spend 49 hours in a platzcart carriage, when I can reach my destination in 4 hours by airplane, at less cost?
I think the WTR support system works well, but if you want to go by train I suggest you start booking the maximum 45 days in advance, because it could take up to a week of back-and-forth messages before you get the tickets you want.
