i've had a crazy idea for a while now. a good few years ago Ladas were being exported back to russia at a rate of hundreds a day from the UK. RHD models, I suspect from breaking/spares. now there aren't many ladas left on our roads here in UK (older rivas etc). i would like to buy one, drive it to moscow and sell it on - i've read things on the forum, which suggests its not exactly a practical idea. i'm not out to make money, its just something i want to do, the road trip iteself is the jounrey, and if the car sells for a few hundred quid (200UKP) it would go something towards the aeroflot flight back to London. so given I don't want to import it properly as such, and don't declare this at the border, what are my chances of palming it off at a breakers "no questions asked". if i don't return to a border and declare the car has been take out of the country am i going to get the russian authorities chasing me?

If you read the next thread, 'Going on Holiday By Car', the issue is discussed there.

This is one of those imponderable questions. When you cross the Russian Border, your car gets logged in to the customs system with your passport details. The customs have access to this information, but do they share it with passport control in Domodevo airport? Probably not, I suspect. Since most air travellers can go through the green channel, you might not even need to make a declaration on the way out. From memory most customs declarations (entering russia) done in duplicate at airports just get stamped and you keep one copy - no computers involved. However, if you happen to travel in by (another) car again (computers), then I suspect that something would happen. I've never tried this. One other poster (I forget) was thinking of doing a similar thing in reverse.
You might get away with this but who knows? Is your visit to Russia a one off or do you anticipate going there alot in the future? This might influence your decision.

Rgds

You will waste a day at the boarder crossing --- filling in all the forms etc etc
Then whenever you get to where you are going--- Moscow etc--- your car will be impossible to sell because it will have the English numbers on it and you only get a 2 month ticket at the boarder-( which can be extended by 2 months later)
I know I have done it
forget it too much hassle for a car which will be impossible to sell with English numbers on

Sure I guess you could sell it for a few bucks for spares

any buyer might want the documents for it--- but sure guess you could do that
but at some stage in the future the customs chappies will look for it/you

What I would do is to simply to abandon it just before you are due to fly back and park it somewhere where it wont be found for a while and report it stolen to the police

thats the easy way around it and what I would do---- take the plates of when you leave it and dump them somewhere else--- At least it would cover your back on any future visit
