We're planning to take the Trans Mongolian railway to travel from Moscow to Beijing in April, and have a few visa questions. If it makes a difference, I'll be travelling on a UK passport and my friend will be on an Australian passport (both travelling from London).

We want to have a flexible itinerary to allow us to stop an extra day or two if we like somewhere, or make an unscheduled stop if we get a particular recommendation.

At the moment, the plan is to arrive in Moscow on April 18th and leave for Beijing on 22nd April. Our only constraint is that we need to be in Beijing for our flight home on the 11th May.

Do we need to book every night's accommodation in Russia in advance, and specify each town we'll visit on the tourist visa ? Or, is it possible to just say we'll be in Moscow to start with, and go from there?

Also, any ideas on how much a Moscow-Irkutsk-UlaanBaator-Beijing ticket would cost us? From what we've been reading, the ticket is no good without an associated reservation. Is this right ? If so, how does one go about getting both?

Janette,
I'd suggest the best place to start (if you haven't already) is with Bryn Thomas' Trans-Siberian Handbook. It also covers Moscow-Beijing.
The train only departs once a week, so be careful with planning your itinerary and stops.
I'm sure the crew at Waytorussia could help, sorting out Visa Invitations and even buying tickets for you (at least to Ulan-Ude/Irkustk).
I went Vladivostok/Moscow with a three day stop in Krasnoyarsk. The Russian Embassy had no problems with this because I was "travelling in a continous direction" if you like, even on a tourist Visa. I also missed my first train in Vladivostok and found out I paid *three times* the ticket's face value by having pre-bought it in OZ. Needless to say, I've never done that since........

For train info try www.poezda.net.....be careful with station spelling as the symbol for "ya" (backwards R) is translated as "ia" or "iar"......Oh, and all times are Moscow times....no matter where you are! If you need some help with this, e-mail me at ctefehinoz@hotmail.com...............

Other than that-----ENJOY!
