The only modern Russian music I've listened to so far has been Zemfira. I really love her voice and music from what I've heard.

Russia has a lot of artists singing modern pop music. The music is soft and lively, much like the ABBA sounds of the 70s and 80s. They have weekly TV shows, which feature all their popular artists. It is great music, unlike other western european music, which is more decadent, and either heavy rock or hip-hop. The singers in general have great voices, and the lyrics are love based.

It is of course the language barrier which stops Russian pop being more accessible.

Girls who have recorded in English, like Taty, Alcy and Ariana, have quite an international following. I imagine that A-Studio, Korni or Zemfira would easily cross borders too.

Russian mainstream, like Pugacheva, seems to me uncannily similar in genre to French mainstream - a corny mixture of 'chanson' and 'music hall' with lots of accordion. Maybe they should record in French.

Try 5Nizza or Pyatnizza, Leningrad some others. Also, Gogol Bordello. Frankly, they kick @$$ over anything produced by US record companies. Not only are albums exciting, but these guys are great in concert as well. All recently toured the US to great audiences.

What's that song that goes "leto! leto! leto!"? It was popular during the summer of 2003. I think it might have been called "Goodbye Summer" or something like that. Then there was one about a chocolate rabbit or something.

Agata Kristi are pretty much the best music I've heard, ever. Are they popular in Russia? They seem kind of like a 'boy band' -- i.e. geared towards teen girls Smile

Some of the best hits this year are based on Caucasian music. Singer Rotaru (Ротару) Я же его любила was according to me the best recording this year! Others include group A Sortie, and Чай вдвоём.
Oriental and middle east sounds are also very popular, like this hit: Блестяцне-Восточная любовь
