Can someone recommend a few good shops to purchase music CDs and movie DVDs in Moscow? Or is it best to buy these at markets and metro stations? I'm looking for mainly Russian music and movies.

- Thanks

Hi Brent,

The best place is Gorbushka, which is located just next to Bagrationovskaya metro station (west Moscow, blue line, about 10 mins from the central Arbatskaya). When you come out of the metro, just turn left and there will be a huge building with a lot of adverts on it.
Gorbushka is the most famous pirate music, film and software market in Russia, and you can find virtually anything you want there. A CD usually costs about 100R ($3), a DVD is 200R ($7), a software disk is about 100R ($3). They also have a lot of legal stuff, appliance stores, etc.

Another good place to go, if you want only legal stuff, is Soyuz stores (something like Virgin in the UK). The most central one is located at TSUM mall (metro Kuznetsky Most or Teatralnaya), on the top floor.

If you ever go to St. Petersburg, there's a good place on Nevsky Prospekt, just 2 minutes to the left from Moskovsky railway station (where trains from moscow arrive). It's called "PLAY" and is opened 24 hours. They have everything as well.

Oh, by the way, I advise you to buy legal stuff to support Russian film- and musicmakers, so TSUM is better, I think.

Nevertheless, here's a photo of Gorbushka: http://www.waytorussia.net/gallery/details.php?image_id=18
