We're a Mom and two daughters 'traveling trio' who would are attempting to organize a trip to Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Moscow on our own in July 2004. We really don't want to go the organized tour route if it isn't absolutely necessary, but I've been looking at airfares (from Cleveland, OH to Helsinki and then from Moscow back to Cleveland) and they're around $1,700 each. Maybe we're just looking at all the wrong airlines. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Finnair is your safest bet on getting a deal.... right now they have got USD 399 from JFK to Moscow and that's via Helsinki. Usually you are allowed to stop in Helsinki once. FINNAIR NEW YORK NY Tel. +1 800 950 5000 or www.finnair.com

I would suggest you fly to Helsinki, buy a train package to St. Petersburg which is only few hours away.... Return to Helsinki and fly to Moscow... See train info on http://www.vr.fi/heo/eng/ita/ita.htm

One of the reasons your flight is so expensive is that you're taking an "open-jawed" trip, one of the most expensive ways to fly. It would be much cheaper to fly roundtrip Cleveland to Helsinki, take the afternoon train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg (You'll arrive around 10:30pm in SPB). It's a very nice train and in July, the entire trip will be in daylight, so you'll get to see a lot of Finland and northern Russia. There is a morning train from Helsinki that's a bit nicer, but it's really hard to connect with unless you stay overnight in Helsinki, arguably one of the most expensive cities in Europe.

Then you can either fly to Moscow or, if you haven't had enough train riding yet, there's a very nice overnight from SPB which gets into Moscow around 6am or so. Both the trains are quite inexpensive.

You can then either fly directly back from Moscow to Helsinki, or do the train thing again, then on back to Cleveland.

I've done this same trip (although NY rather than Cleveland) several times and it has never been more than $1000 total travel cost.

Also, check on Travelocity.com with flexible flying dates for the cheapest fares.

I just bought 4 tickets New York-Helsinki-St. Peter and coming back Moskow-Helsinki-New York. I paid $798 a ticket including taxes. This price is for travel in mid August. I used Estern Consolidated Tours. They are very knowelegable and easy to work with. This is the best fare you can get. Do not take train form Helsinki to St. Peter. Takes for ever!. Between St. Peter and Moscow take a overnight train, $40 a person. Flying back from Moskow was cheaper than from Peter.
Good Luck.
