All right, so I have just returned from the hotel's pool and I have had time to think...
I have been studying Russian culture and history extensively (And at some points aggressively!) for almost two years now. And I have decided I should probably buckle down and seriously learn the language.
I currently own a Lonely Planet Russian phrase book, so I have the basics down like hello, yes, no, and thank you. But I would like to expand pass that.
Oh yeah, I also know how to say "I' am your enemy." and "I have lost my mind. Thank you t.A.T.u.!
If anyone knows any fast, easy, and effective ways for learn Russian, can you share them with me?
Thanks,
Zach |

No such thing, I have decided
Probably the best way to go about it would be to get a private tutor, if you can afford that.
Or . . . perhaps try finding a class in your city. Probably most large cities in North America have some sort of night classes you can take.
If these are not plausible options, try a book. Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian is the one I've got, and altho it's not great to learn by, it's probably the best you'll do as far as books are concerned.
Try to find a penfriend.
Go to www.masterrussian.com
Listen to lots of Russian music (tho please avoid TATU as they stink)
You're in for a long, slow, painful process -- I know because I'm going through it myself right now -- but it will be ultimately rewading if you don't give up too early.
Good luck! |

| Actually Zach should not feel discouraged, just because you (bryak) seem to have a problem absorbing the language. Some people take longer than others, depending on how their brain functions. |

Oh no, I wasn't trying to discourage him, just saying that it's difficult is all. I don't know if I'm fast or slow at absorbing the language, but just about anybody learning any language in an environment where they cannot use it very much in a practical setting, is going to have a tough time.
Learning another language is tough and takes a lot of work. This I believe to be fact. But it's also fun and rewarding at times. |

Thanks for your help bryak. It would be impossible to get a private Russian tutor where I live. And thank you for defending me, Fire_Goddess.
But I need no defense. I don't have any trouble at all learning any language, I'm actually quite good at it. I have been taking Spanish in school since October and I can hold conversations in Spanish for a while with people. I also had an advantage to learning Spanish because I'm a huge Shakira fan.
I also know a few words in phrases in French, German, and Polish.
I just haven’t applied myself to learn Russian. I think I will start with a Berlitz or Teach Yourself program. Rosetta Stone is too expensive for me, it's an Apple company. I should have guessed it would be astronomical.
Well I have to pack all of my stuff now because my brother broke the TV in the room and we have to move to another one.

This CD is a fast, easy way to memorize about 400 words to get you started. Works pretty good if you ask me. |

I really like the phrasebook, but it is nice to hear native speakers saying the words. |

I have noticed that not a whole lot of americans who are learning Russian can say the word "Íåò" the right way. It always come out as Nyet. |

| Well that word is ingrained in to our culture. Now I'm not 100% sure but I think that came out of making fun of the USSR during the cold war. |

| Zach, i have this program called 'Kapusta'. It's a Finnish thing for people/kids that want to start learning Russian. It has a number of games and puzzles to improve your vocabulary, read and spoken. Don't know where it's available though. |

Hello to everybody! If you want to teach Russian, I would be glad to help you, becouse I need to practice my English. I think, it's a great oppotunity to help each other. I'm from Moscow, and it is my native language, so if my offer is interesting for you, please, mail my adress dalbaevadogmail.ru or my icq - 292-161-971
P.S. I've read in the forum, that the word ÍÅÒ is difficult to pronounce, the fact makes me fun, I've not thought that it is.
And one more - I've read, that we don't smile. Yes, unfourtunately it is. To my opinion, the reason of it is that we always keep our problems in mind, we can't stop thinking about. It makes our life difficult, that's why we can't relax and forgot about everything.
Best wishes. Maria. |

I'm glad I'm not the only person who cannot accurately pronounce "Net", although I didn't realize it until recently, when my husband started teasing me about it. It leaves a lot to be desired with the rest of the language, when you have trouble with a word as basic as "No".
Zach, I bought a 3 disc cd program that I listen to in my car while driving to work. I don't know how much driving you do, but I found that for me, this is a good use of my time while I'm sitting in traffic. I'm sure some people might think I'm sitting there talking to myself, but oh well |
