Way to Russia Talk Lounge

Hi - My boyfriend and I are planning a visit to Russia this summer. I have a thousand questions to ask, because we would like to arrange the tour ourselves, and even though I´ve found this site a wonderfull help, I feel that maybe some of the information may be outdated. We are thinking of flying to Moscow and from there travel to St. Petersburg and fly home. We're not really in to big cities too much and would like to experience the more rural Russia - been thinking of the Golden Ring and Novgorod. Should we plan on taking public transportation or renting a car? The trip from Moscow to St. P. is best done by train right? - The fast train or the overnight train? How about if you take a train to Novgorod, and then stay there a while and take a nother train to Moscow? You can also go by boat right? Anyway just any update information is most welcome. As for accomodation how are there prices for the towns I'm mentioning? Actually it would be a great experience with homestays, but they're not to common, are they? I would very much like to get in touch with anybody who are interested in talking/writing with visitors from Denmark. I'm 23, studying psychology at the university of Copenhagen and my boyfriend is 25 and is a farmer and has his own company. We really would like to experience a more real Russia, than just the regular overcrowded turistplaces. (Actually we'd like to travel the Transsib, but found it a little too expensive - when one wishes to has own compartement!) Hope to hear from anybody, maybe someone who would like to practice their english - as I'm imagining to start learning some russian, once the semester is over. Please write!!! I have a few danish friends who I met in Russia. They seem to like the place, and I'm sure you will too. A couple of comments. I wouldn't drive anywhere near Moscow and probably not anywhere else. It is crazy just riding in the taxis. Also I recommend the (better) overnight trains. I have taken them between Moscow and St Petersburg several times and also from Moscow and Samara. It saves a night in a hotel and can be quite fun. However, if you want to get a first class compartment for the two of you and shut the world out to sleep or whatever, that's a good way to travel too. Good luck and have fun.
