For those of you who live in the UK, there is a 6 part documentary starting tonight on the More4 satellite channel at 9pm.

It should prove to be quite controversial as the premise of the documentary is that Russia is "dying". "Its birth rate is akin to the developed world but has a mortality rate equal to the 3rd world (life expectancy for men is 56)". The film claims that by the middle of this century, Russia could have lost more than a third of its population. If you get chance to see it, I would be really interested to find out what you think, especially if you are Russian.

They are showing these ads on British TV every other second at the moment.

It looks like they want to portray Russia as being a dead nation with no hope, but I think one thing they are going to go to town with is how Russia's policy of killing innocent old men and women in Chechnya has brought much of this about. After all, Britain hates the way Russia does this.

Watched it and recorded it to DVD-Ram so I'll be compiling the weeks best onto DVD to send to friends in Russia for their opinions. I can make copies for peanuts, so if any Russians are interested I could include a few (max 3) and ask a friend to post them from St P to your homes.
I watched it, as I said, and found it wasn't a write-off of Russia, but concern at how bad things have got so quickly, with a real wish that the government would address the issues before it gets too late.
The presenter, Marcel Theroux (Small interview/profile here http://www.arts.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2002/03/07/bamarc07.xml)
states at the beginning that he "...fell in love..." with Russia during the eighties. Throughout the program he conducts interviews in person in Russian, not via interpreters, so this doesn't seem so far fetched.
Anyway, PM me if you want a copy - first come first served... Wink
