Hi there. I'm a Chinese-American who will be vacationing in Russia next month (Moscow). I'll be there with two of my friends who are very familiar with the area. (One of them was born in Moscow originally). Because I'm very interested in going out and experiencing the nightlife and meeting people, I'm curious about the attitudes of Russians towards people who are Chinese. Any comments? Or is this a non-issue?
Thanks in advance! |

| Do you mean if there is any racism in Russia towards Chinese people? If you're going to Moscow, then you will be surprised to see that there are a lot of Chinese (and other Asians) people there. I don't think you would "stand out in the crowd" as a Afro-American would. As for Russians' attitude towards Chinese people.. I can't really say myself, since I don't live in Russia anymore, but having many Chinese friends I came to realize that Chinese and Russians are very close on many levels. Hard to explain.. I know that the cultures are very different but some attitudes are very similar. |

| I was just thinking that too. Wasn't Mongolia a "puppet state" of the USSR? |

Thanks. I thought that was the case, I just wanted to double check. So, do you know why they didn't join the USSR? |

I don't think Russians and Chinese get on well at all. Perhaps the political situation is improving now as are trade ties, but the two countries barely spoke for years. I've often heard Russian friends complain about xitryi (cunning) Chinese who come along and take jobs or make money out of Russians and then run off home with it. Admittedly, I have spent most of my time in the provinces, Moscow is presumably more open-minded.
None of the above means you would have problems though... for reasons other posters mention |

gzhelka: I can assure you that the stereotypical view of Chinese people making money in another country and "running home with it" is partially true. As a Chinese myself, I've come to know and learn most of what our motives are. We're the selfish type who likes to use others and then avoid them when they're deemed 'useless'. Notice that most opportune Chinese are immigrating to Canada/USA for a better life but as many economists predict that China will be the number 1 economy by the year 2020, these same Chinese will flock back to China to make a better living, without looking back. It's an "all for yourself" vision as far as I feel from the chinese.
But back to what you originally said...my girlfriend is from the province of Chita and her family have accepted me with open arms. We're very happy to be together. |
