1. What is the return (all inclusive) fare from St.Petersburg to Beijing for two (2) people ?
2. What towns and cities would you suggest we visit en route to Beijing ?
3. Does the Trans Siberian Railway go through Rostov-on-Don where we have close Russian friends at the Music Conservatoire at the University of Rostov-on-Don, whom we would like to visit if possible ?
4. We know how to obtain our Russian visas but how do we obtain Chinese visas for entrance into China?
5. What is the sleeping accommodation like on the 1st.class coaches of the Trans Siberian railway?
6. What are the menus usually served in the restaurants on the Trabs Siberian Railways.
6. Is it recommended that we have some sort of Health Care coverage when travelling on the Trans Siberian Railway from Russian to China and return.
7. Are there certain medical shots (preventive innocculations) which are mandatory by Russian and China, under International statutary health laws, which we should have, before leaving Mexico?
8. We do not speak Russian, only English and Spanish. Could you suggest a quick method of speaking Russian...either a book or a tape. We are not interested in writing the Cyrillic Language which would take us years to adequately learn, but just something which will enable us to communicate with our Russian friends and acquaintances as we travel through the country?
9. Our past visits to Russia have been very rewarding and educative and we would wish this anticipated journey across Russia to be even more so.
Thank you for any help you can give me on the questions I have asked.

It should be about $800 US each, not more, if you mean 2nd class direct train. Maybe, it's possible to get for $500 return, but this will be REALLY hard and you will have to travel on low quality trains.
So, maybe it's better to take a plane back.
I suggest you take tickets St. Pete - Moscow and then a separate ticket Moscow - Beijing.

Moscow, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk or Ulan-Ude (if you have time). We have online guides to all these cities, see http://waytorussia.net/destinations.html

It doesn't go through Rostov-on-Don. You can take a direct overnight train from Moscow.

Sorry, dunno about that...

You have like a compartment with 2 berths, quite comfortable, showers, cleaner than usual, and all this costs twice more.
If you want more comfort, the best thing is not to take 1st class, but to stop as often as possible. The cities I suggested above will make you spend not more than 1 day in the train (except Moscow - Novosibrisk, which is about 36 hours).
| Quote: | | 6. What are the menus usually served in the restaurants on the Trabs Siberian Railways. |
Traditional Russian food: meat, steaks, potatoes, starters, salads, etc. about $15 / person at least.
If you want to save, you can buy food from women at the stations, they have some nice stuff sometimes.

It's up to you.

I don't know about China. I know that in Russia there are certain medical shots which you got in your country already, I'm sure.
If you will be going for trekking walks during May - July it is highly recommended to make a vaccination against encephalitis.

For a starter, visit http://waytorussia.net/WhatIsRussia/Russian.html -- it will give you a good basic knowledge.
Then make a search on this forum -- I remember some people recommended good stuff not long ago.

I hope so

Chinese tourist visas are easy to obtain, no invitation letter needed. check with your chinese embassy in your country.
for China I would certainly have a vaccination Hepatitis A en B. if you plan to travel south, you should also get Japanese encephalitis. if you decide to stay in beijing, only hepatitis A en B should do. |
