Hey,
I have been reading contradictary sources on the internet with some advising you to take travellers cheques, and others insisting that its near impossible to have them exchanged to cash in Russia. :/
Could someone please clarify the situation for me?
Thanks,

| I've never used or thought I needed travelers checks in Russia. I'm sure they aren't too hard to exchange in the major cities, but with ATMs everywhere, I think they are obselete. |

| You will find travelers cheques very hard to get rid of in Russia. Bring your ATM card instead. |

I cannot get them where I work, and use only one thing: Excellent quality 100 USD notes. They work every where, and if you have to pay a bribe on the street or at the airport, they are much more effective than TC!

travellers' cheques--bah, forget it.
As of now, I'd bring Euros if I need cash at hand. The USD is falling quite fast against the RUR, but both EUR and USD are easily exchangable.
ATMs are eveywhere in cities. Bring your debit or credit card then. You can draw rubles/dollars/euros at most ATMs. |

A bit of currency to change at out of the way places no more than $500 and Euros are better.
2 Atm cards just in case one refuses to work and you will be set! |

Hi guys,
I need to take some dollars out of Russia, what's the best way? What's a limit you can take out in cash? Or should I buy traveller's cheques or a money belt? |

The ordinary export limit is currently $10,000 (all curencies combined) without an official explanation or proof of legality, more can be exported with official documentation. Anything over $3000 should officially be declared. Bring a money belt or neck pouch and don't lose sight of it.
Check out www.rusemblon.org and go into the 'Money' section to clarify the situation.

Of course. There are lots of currency exchange places in the center of all large cities where you can buy or sell US dollars. I heard some ATMs can give you dollars if you use your US ATM card. Remember, though, that oficially, no merchant will accept dollars in Russia today, only rubles. |

I hope someone can give me a certain answer on this: is it possible to withdraw cash in American dollars from my American checking account at a Russian ATM machine in St. Petersburg? Mediashark seems to be suggesting that this can be done. If yes, which ATM machines should I use? Do I still pay any conversee fee or surcharge for doing this? [/quote] |

Yes, you take out American Cash out of certain ATMs. Which ones? I am not sure.
Charges is about 3$ per transaction. |

Banks here are not very closely related to each other in the business sense, so one card might work with only certain banks' ATMs. Sberbank (the Savings Bank) is a good bet though. Unless there happens to be the same bank branch, your transaction is likely to be charged at like 150rur or a few dollars per transaction. This applies to most ATMs dealing with a 'strange' bank, local or not.
Most banks can dispense dollars as well as rubles (or even euros), but that's all I can answer. I imagine you could. |

| Small banks' ATMs in St. Pete gave only RUR on my debit card. |
