Does anyone else wonder who "Они" might be in this strange signature.
They're coming to take him away ha ha!
And he's only just got out. |

Crabman, I am surprised by your statement considering your teddybear has a gun to his head... |

Don't forget to grab the moose, the fish and the raincoat while you're firing over your shoulder. |

Они = They
Any other questions, address the Basil, the brown toothed dog. You both seem to be on the same level, mentally. |

Thanks Mr Linguistic Genius.
The question I asked was who "they" may be. The ones that know you so well in your cosy make believe world. |

Вы очень хороши при ответе на ваши собственные вопросы. Почему Вы даже потрудились спрашивать их? 'Они' были бы любым, но Вами. |

You must stop this nonsense at once. You have no idea what gibberish your online translator has put together here. Just relax and don't dig yourself in any deeper. |

What's wrong with this statement? It says that you are good at answering your own questions, so why do you bother to ask them. And that " They " is anyone but you. What's wrong with the translation, or are you the one blabbering? Feel free to correct it. I'm up for constructive criticism. I'm not a self important ass like you. | [/quote]
Does it? OK then. My problem is that I don't use a translation program and consequently I am probably not up to date . I'll try and keep abreast of all the latest trends in the language as you feed them out to all of us here. |

| Nikir: I think you answered this before, but were you born in Russia or just your parents? Just curious if you learned Russian because of your environment, or if you parents just spoke Russian at home and that's how you learned it. |

Krasatulya, I was born in Australia and my parents were born in China, in one of the Russian colonies there after the revolution. My grandparents came from Russia but left there in 1921.
I learnt the language by speaking it at home and also went to Russian school on Saturdays as a kid. |

Well thats not an answer to my question. What is wrong with my statement? I really was asking for help with the translation. If I'm wrong, the please do correct it. Anyone is welcome to correct it, if it was wrong. The forum is called "practise your Russian", after all. But I use simple terms so that I can see developed patterns in the language. Seemed proper to me. |

Try not to translate word for word, but rather try to connect the words to each other learn the meaning of the entire frase or sentence. At least I think that's what helped me learn English, and what is now helping me learn Spanish too. (I am going for a vacation in Mexico this summer). |

I understand what you mean. Learn the words in context. Its hard, because there are certain words that don't exist in Russian, so that some times it is like french, where you have to take the long way around to say a certain thing. Russian is a difficult language that way. English is a relatively simple language. Russian has very little of what we would call slang. |

Um, as an American living in Russia (and trying to learn the language) I can absolutely attest that this is not true. Russian slang is quite rich and colorful.
Actually, it's been amazing to discover that many slang phrases can almost be translated word-for-word into English and match our equivalent slang. On a very basic level, people are people, no matter where you're from, and similar types of experiences tends to breed similar slang expressions. Of course, there are many Russian slang expressions that do not have an American equivalent and vice-versa.
FYI, I recall before leaving the US seeing a book in a local Barnes and Noble which was dedicated to Russian slang. I opted at the time not to purchase it because I figured it would be years before I could make real use out of it (i.e., concentrate on learning the 'real' language first). I think a quick search on Amazon might turn it up for you (and anyone else interested). Unfortunately I don't remember the title nor the author.
